I think what really did them in was the ensuing back and forth with Toby Keith, after he made a comment about it, she comes out on an awards show wearing a shirt emblazoned with the letters FUTK.
her comment about Keith's song.
A year earlier, Maines was entangled in a related controversy with a more conservative-leaning contemporary, Toby Keith. In response to the September 11 attacks, Keith penned the song “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” which turned into a huge hit. Maines called it “ignorant,” saying, “It targets an entire culture -- and not just the bad people who did bad things. You've got to have some tact. Anybody can write, 'We'll put a boot in your arse.'"

They had Cletus T. Judd acting as host and he would come out between acts and interact with the crowd, show his videos, etc. I remember him commenting that her shirt really meant "Found Under Table Kneeling"

Only jingoists let a musicians political stance bother them...Just listen to the music and ignore the substance, fricking warmongers

And I bet that deep down she knows she f'd up but would never ever admit it. "Sure I'll take getting no money on royalty airplays".... Sometimes you do have to STFU and play. No one is saying that by them performing they endorse the president. THEY brought W into the entertainment fold and THEY suffered the consequence. I like some of their stuff but I prefer the politics to be kept out. I go to be entertained and not preached to. I love Pearl Jam but keep that preachy shite at home. I pay for you to sing, not preach.

Not exactly trailer trash. Natalie Maines studied briefly at Berkley Conservatory. And her father is a very well known producer and steel player.

I wonder what the rest of the band thinks.

Who is she talking to? Some underground format? Good riddance, I promote her feeling to rebel and will purchase her ticket to the third world country of its choice.

1. They made/make some great music. They are legit musicians.
2. I hate that they disappeared because of the stupid comment. But she prob should have kept her mouth shut...
3. A bit off topic, but I'm afraid the great Isbell is headed down that preachy political road a bit. The DBT def have.

All about timing. Had she made her comments in 2005-6 instead of 2002, they may have been fine?
It's more about who your fan base is.
When country music fans aka majority conservative are your bread and butter, why even take a stand publicly at all? No one would care what their opinions were if they just kept it to themselves.
What does Carrie Underwood think about Obama or Trump? What does Taylor Swift think about Obama or Trump? I don't know, because they don't go around talking about it either way.
The Dixie Chicks didn't make a name for themselves or build their audience being an anti establishment/anti war/activist band, so it really made no sense for them to go there other than their own hubris/thinking anyone gave a shite about their political opinion

Exactly. I don't disagree. Her doubling down on disdain for Toby Keith and Reba??
"I'd rather have a small group of cool fans, than a large group of fans who have Reba and Toby Keith in their 5CD changer"... Something like that. I also believe it was another member making that quote and not Maines.
That, I felt was ridiculous. They were a bluegrass type act when thye started out. Early, before they got famous

If you're just now figuring out those guys are very political minded you've been under a rock They still make great music regardless, but they've never made a secret of their political leanings

GREAT musicians always lean left. Think about it. Can you name one musician that you consider great that you feel is conservative?
Ted and Bocephus don't count. Ted was not great and both were probably fairly liberal when they were creating their best music. Or at least much more liberal than they are now.
