"Duke' Cunningham. Navy ace in Viet Nam. Let's remember him for that.

Sea Fury at one time held the speed record for prop-driven airplanes.

Considering how effective the Stuka was for the Germans, I've alway wondered why the us army never used more of the A-24s. We had air supremacy after D-day so they could have been used with impunity.

Couple of reasons.

First and foremost, by late 1944 the Dauntless (as good as it was) had reached the point of obsolescence. In terms of payload, range, and performance it was far surpassed by many other platforms. Aircraft like the Hawker Typhoon, P-47, P-38, and even the Mustang just brought so much more to the table.

Secondly, the Army didn't buy into the dive bomber/CAS mission like the Luftwaffe did with the Stuka until later in the war. They didn't get it really worked out until towards the end of the North African campaign (later 1943) and by then the Dauntless was on the back side of its career.

There were 54+ A-24s on the way to the Philippines on 8 Dec 1941. The crews were already on the islands. If MacArthur hadn't sat around with his thumb up his arse for 6 hours after learning of Pearl Harbor and thus let his air force get all but wiped out on the ground (making it impossible to get the aircraft to the islands) those A-24s could have played hell on the Japanese and the Army's opinion of them would have probably changed considerably.

On with "Duke" Cunningham: This is an artist depiction of his third victory in one day, which made him an ace. Flying "Showtime 100," he went up against - some would say "mythical" - top-notch NV pilot. Who was his foe supposed to be?

"Colonel Toomb". Allegedly the NVAF's leading fighter ace of the war.

That's the USS Forrestal burning after a Zuni rocket accidentally fired from an armed aircraft on the deck.

Sen. John McCain was very fortunate not to have been killed in the accident.
