Do you carry a backup alternator or water pump? A backup fuel pump?

All of those are a lot more likely to fail than running out of gas.

It's a strange hill yall are chosing to die on. It is a problem that no one in the thread has admitted to ever happening to them, yet some are pretending this is a chronic problem.

I think it's because lots of folks are stuck in the rut of thinking that filling up with gas is just replaced with recharging, all else done the same with no change in procedure or habit.

As in, I'll just drive my EV until the battery is low then stop and fast charge. Yeah that sounds like a huge pain, a waste of time and money, and range anxiety would be through the roof. They can't get out of that way of thinking to realize that stopping somewhere to "fill up" an EV is pretty rare. Charging at home is cheap and convenient.

If you stop random vehicles on the road, I'd put strong money that EVs would average much higher miles of range remaining.

I think about it like this: what if you had a gas pump at home? Yeah it's pretty slow, pumps maybe 1 gallon per hour, but all you have to do is put the nozzle in when you park at night and by morning you have a full tank. And the gas is half the cost of buying it at a gas station. Who wouldn't want that?

I carry a jumper pack, spare fuses/relays, tire plug kit, extra oil, extra coolant, hydraulic jack, variety of wrenches and tools, spare oil filter, spare plugs, and spare fuel injectors. Failing alternators and water pumps generally give symptoms and therefore time to address before causing a breakdown. I certainly carry enough to be prepared for anything short of a catastrophic failure. How does one do that for an EV when an electronic component fails or the software glitches (certainly happens far more often than running out of power)?

It's just some of us have a lot of experience with automotive problems and recognize there are a LOT of problems EV's have that are glossed over or outright ignored by their cheerleaders.

When was the last time you bought a vehicle?

A few years ago, and yes I know ICE vehicles have had computers in them since the 1980's. My buddy's Tesla died in his garage while he was on vacation and had to have it flatbedded to Texas for repair. Every PCM I have had to deal with is comparatively simple and robust compared to what his Tesla requires. Good thing his backup vehicle is an old truck.

Yeah, called a trunk or under the rear bench seat of my truck. Fits into a Rubbermaid tote. Maybe if you ever did some of your own planning and prep work you'd know this isn't a big deal at all. Even my fiancée keeps a comprehensive setup in the toolbox of her truck.

I’ve been a licensed driver for over 20 years and have never needed any of those things immediately. But I also have regular preventative maintenance done on my vehicles.

You don't. You have a backup plan that includes roadside assistance.

Pretty simple concept.

All cars have issues. I don't think running out of gas/fuel is an issue that is any more unique because the fuel source changes.

You mean you haven't had to swap out a pinion gear on the side of the highway? Happens at least 3 times a year in these parts.

Dude carrying around spark plugs like he is going to start running his carb rich, foul the plugs, then change them on the side of the road.

Idk how you sleep at night knowing you’re fricked without a spare driveshaft, timing rebuild kit and oil pan.

You should read about all the supplies he keeps on hand and his maintenance routine for lawn equipment which he thinks is no trouble at all compared to replacing a battery pack every 5 years.

Running out of gas or battery really isn't an "automotive problem"

I will say I always carry around a socket for my axle nuts and some common size wrenches.

Only because I have had to pull axle shafts on the side of the road though. Would have made lots more sense to tow the Jeep and get a ride, but I was seeing levels of pissed off that didn't have me thinking straight. Two hours of wrenching therapy probably kept me sane.

Easier to grab a 5 gallon gas can rather than a tow truck if you run out of energy tho.

I used to keep a spare cam and crank sensor in the glovebox when I had a 7.3. But idk why anyone needs an oil filter, fuel injector(s), etc. if those are common failure items there’s a bigger problem.

Easiest to never need either.
