So what's the deal with Athens, Ohio? Why is it so poor?

Looking at a little bit of online info... it doesn't seem like there are a ton of kids there. A large public university is there. Not too many old people. Just a bunch of 20-45 year olds.

Does it not have any other industry? Does the college not pay well? Anybody live near there that can give us some insight into this area?

My cousin went to Ohio University. I visited him there once. Not a lot going on in that town, industry wise, but it was a pretty cool little college town. It's kind of out of the way though, and likely experiencing the same struggles a lot of small towns are. Add to it the opioid epidemic which I imagine has hit that area hard.

That was part of the coal country area of Appalachia. It's almost an extension of West Virginia.

The only area I've seen that rivals it in terms of poverty is the Mississippi Delta. It's mostly poor white people though.

I spent time in Dayton Ohio and it's a shite hole, seems like they were all industrial years ago and a lot of the industries moved over seas or shut down.

Dayton employment information
Index
Dayton
Ohio
Median earnings male
$20,721
Median earnings female
$17,055
Unemployment rate
7.5%
Poverty level
34.5%

Typical Rust Belt type stuff. Industry moved out.

Most of the local economy probably revolves around the university, which also means low wage service jobs.

This answer seems to be the most likely. I looked at the google map of Athens, OH, and it is close to W.Va. and close to my guess WRT where the coal mining region.

Man that whole area is depressing. When I lived in the Dayton area, I had to go out that way to train employees. Gallipolis, Ironton and Portsmouth are way worse than Athens. Then cross over to WV and it's even worse.

Coal. Like others said, the delta got hit hard when the fishing industry moved to China. And everyone was buying cheap shite from over there.

I read yesterday that the three largest employers in Athens County are Ohio University, the hospital and Walmart.

Isn't Louisiana pretty poor? It's a little odd that a state that ranks last in just about everything is so quick to give their money to someone else.

We aren't the poorest state but I think we are bottom 4 or 5.

That's the story for a lot of areas. Teaching Related, Law enforcement related, Healthcare related, Walmart.

But we are #1 in Football. So, all the politicians get free tickets to the National Championship and Alario and JBE get to go to Heisman Awards.
