That's one thing I've never understood about rural living / country folk. Why is there so much derelict crap everywhere?
It's not just the house trailers (I at least understand poverty). The country is full of nice, apparently middle-class houses with yards just littered in debris: disused agricultural implements, PeePaw's 1972 Dodge truck, collapsing sheds and barns, satellite dishes that haven't worked in ages...
Why despoil the rural landscape in such a manner? PeePaw would tell you to get rid of that damned truck if he could talk to you.

I have lived in a HOA subdivision north of Houston for 28 years and we currently pay $525 a year. There are 3,306 homes. The population of our subdivision is about 12,000. We have pools, basketball and volleyball courts and a dog park. The current HOA has approximately $750,000 in emergency funds. It is well run. But many residents complain about letters and petty things on our subdivision FB page. Yet they do not want to be bothered about going to meetings.
The last election was set up to replace 2 board members. There were 3 candidates. Each house has 1 vote. We have 3,300 homes. The winning candidate had 44 votes. Second place got 20 votes and third place got 12.
About 6 years ago, we got 2 dogs. I felt the dog park needed improvements so I went to the montly meetings for 2 years. The largest attendance ever was the 5 board members and maybe 6 property owners. In 2 years, I was able to get them add benches, remove small trees, add underground drainage and top coat the surface with playground friendly wood mulch. The total tab was about $35,000. I was able to do that by not acting like a jerk. Ask questions, find a contractor to do what you want done. Get it set up to fit in the budget.
If you do not like what is happening or want changes, go to the meetings. Participate instead of whining about things. If you are still unsatisfied then become a candidate but stop bitching and do something about it.

I’m on my HOA’s board. I ran mostly because I hate HOAs and wanted to have some sort of say over my property.
Pros: we have ponds and common areas that need to be maintained. That’s not free or cheap. We have pretty basic covenants that mostly just follow city ordinances, nothing crazy. We built a park and have events for the kids. We use a management company that takes care of billing and paying the vendors, taxes, and liability insurance.
Cons: we get almost zero participation from the residents. No one outside of the board has shown up to our annual meetings. Most of us are ready to get off the board (I’ve been on about 6 years) but no one shows up to run for the seats. Also hate that we have to do violations but if we don’t, some people revert to trashy ways.

None, F dem hoe's. They charge a yearly fee and nothing is ever different in the neighborhood. No gatherings , no improvements.

That sounds like a small town not a subdivision. And probably with as much corruption and politics as a small town.

We have none of those issues. We have a yearly audit that always comes back clean. The biggest concern is do we get flowers on the medians changed out twice a year or 3 times a year.

Mandatory HOAs in shitty DR Horton starter home neighborhoods that want to charge you $300 a year with no community pool or playground are never worth the cost. I don't really care about what color my neighbor paints his house or whether his fence is exactly 5 feet from whatever arbitrary bullshite line you think a fence should be for. And I don't want to pay lawyers to sue my neighbors to put liens on everyone's house. It's mostly a power trip thing for people with little penises who get their kicks from bossing people around and being an anal POS.

I live in a neighborhood without an HOA and while it's nice to sometimes keep my boat in the front yard my neighbor decided to turn his front yard in to a lay down yard.

the 40 % that opt out of a 250 contribution per 600,000 dollar house are just not good people and they will not change. Its made up by volunteers that do a lot of the work for free in addition to their 250 dues

I Cannot think of a single negative to having a strong HOA which works hand in glove with the local sherrifs department to maintain order, respect and decency within its boundaries.
