Green = hippest and most like Dallas (more pretentious and newer apartments etc)
Blue = still hip, but more hipster and Austin-ish (older apartments by and large, but there's new ones too)
Red = still young people in the area, but less local amenities you can walk to. But a short bike ride or uber away
Your best bet is to use Zillow rent version for non commercial apartment searches, and Apartments.com for the large scale apartment complexes.
You can easily find a 1 bedroom for under 1500

I live in Bryker Woods, so I actually KNOW Central Austin, unlike the goobers on this thread who don't even live in Austin who are infesting it with nonsense.
When I first moved here 10 years ago, I lived in the Statehouse on South Congress. It was a fantastic location and I had the time of my life walking to good bars, restaurants, and live music venues whenever I wanted to. Great portion of my life. But I understand it's very expensive now.
If I were moving here in my 20s now, I'd live in one of the new buildings on Burnet south of Anderson and north of 45th. That strip is the "new" South Lamar/Congress in terms of restaurants and bars, but living there is less expensive (it's reasonable for a normal young professional).
Do not live all the way south like Slaughter. It's too far away. Too far from the action and work.
Kill yourself before moving to Round Rock. That's not Austin. You may as well live in Waco.

I’d rather gut myself with a scythe than pay $1500/month for a 1 BR apartment.

That's a solid map and pretty accurate of what Austin is like currently. Cooter is also right about Burnet. It's become more of a walkable area with lots of good bars / restaurants, all near new multi-use apartment buildings. It's also on the rapid bus route.

Wow downtown Austin is more like Dallas every time I see those apt. prices and pics.
Oh well, obligatory "I lived there when it was still Austin" remark. Carry on.

Not sure if it helps, but I would be working on W 2nd Street downtown. Right off the river. Near City Hall

Living in the Burnet / N Lamar (or even S. Lamar if you can afford it) areas mentioned wouldn't be bad. The rapid bus has a stop a block from City Hall. Your commute would probably be 45min, but you wouldn't have to drive. If you drive, you'll probably have to do Mopac or I35 you are probably looking at 20-30 min going to work and 45min - an hour going home unless you use the toll lane.
Don't let the bus stigma scare you. The rapid buses are new and pretty nice, have wifi, and mostly have college students and professionals on them. They are also a lot less crowded than the train.
Rapid Bus Routes
Not sure if you are working for the city, but if you do, you get to ride all public transit for free, which would be nice.

I’m on slaughter and it kinda sucks, especially with where my work is but I had to move immediately so I found the first decent spot I could. I will be moving north next go around but I pay $1075 for a decent sized 1BR.
You can find plenty under $1500, get in contact with smartcityatx, you can give them your wants and price range and they will find the best deals for you. They routinely put up specials on Instagram and other social media.

I lived there 10 years ago and loved it. But if I had a $1,500/month budget, I’d want to be closer to work.

I forgot about Smart City. That's actually who found me my apartment in Dallas. Didn't know they were in Austin too. I'll check them out. Thanks guys this is actually really helpful.

I've been here since 2003. Lived in Riata when first coming to town. Good place for single folks. I'm now married with two girls and live up north in Avery Ranch (that dad life).
If I were in my 20's and could pull it off, I'd get me a place in the Domain. Poon everywhere. Good eats, bars, Top Golf, places to watch the game, and shopping if you give a shite about that.
A couple millennials that work for me won't live north of 35th street/Burnet/North Lamar area.
You'll love it here. Dat Traffic Doh

Live in downtown Austin, if working downtown. If not you want to live anywhere west of downtown
