How in the hell does Mary Lou Retton not have any health insurance?
Yeah I don't want to be in people's pockets but it is odd. As an ex-gymnast she's probably getting medical procedures/surgeries pretty often so insurance seems like a must.

remember the ‘84 LA Summer Olympics better than any other Olympics. They just seemed really big that year.
Most people in my town, Jacksonville area, don't even know the name of my buddy who won 3 golds and a silver in 84 his greatest claim to fame *allegedly* was coining the term loose anus for Greg Looganis.

Her 84 coaches caught a lot of flack years later because they played her hurt. The 80s were different. We were 35 years away from WW2 and sacrifice was the name of the game. Those things don’t happen anymore.

Probably a function of age and fewer TV viewing options at the time, but I remember the ‘84 LA Summer Olympics better than any other Olympics. They just seemed really big that year.
The single biggest thing was that the US boycotted the1980 Olympics. Thanks Jimmy.
People were starved to see the summer Olympics and LA delivered in a big way.

Due to Reagan patriotism was real in the 80s. 84 & 88 were great.

Saw her at an LSU gymnastics road meet at UGA. She was very nice and took a moment to take a pic with our pre-k daughter. We werent gonna bother her while her daughter competed but she saw our daughter decked out in P&G and waved her over. Hope she pulls through.

Agreed, some of that was the boycotting by USSR and us in the summer 1980. The whole USA vs evil empire. Regan had brought back American pride by this time. I was 15 and remember it well.

This is what I was thinking, but that doesn’t mean it’s accurate. But not being insured really stuns me. She may not have $6 million but I’m sure she could afford insurance…

I know she was divorced in 2018, but it seems odd that she wouldn't have health insurance.
I agree that this is bizarre, how old is she? Too young for Medicare?

Medicare starts at 65. She’s 55.

Surprised to hear her net worth that high and lacking insurance. Maybe she was working for USAG for a bit then left and the insurance stopped? I don't know...
I hope she gets this behind her soon.
There was a famous USSR gymnasts from just before her era, Shushunova, she died of pneumonia, iirc. She was much younger.

To be fair, the idea that they should just put up with it and chase the gold was how Larry Nassar got to molest a bunch of them.

You are Assuming a lot in this situation

Shushunova was just after; she was AA champ at 1985 Worlds (tied with teammate Oksana Omelianchik) and 1988 Olympics.
Mukhina was another Soviet Worlds AA Champ in 1978. She was paralyzed in training prior to the 1980 Olympics and died of pneumonia in 2006.

That shite is hideously expensive if you make too much to qualify for Obamacare subsidies, and even moreso if you're self employed, which she probably was. I can definitely see someone in that situation rolling the dice.

Really hate to hear this. She was just doing commercials fairly recently too.
