It's not really restraint.
Today Skippers have monumentally less authority and freedom to make command decisions than they did prior to Slick Willie taking charge. I imagine it's even worse in today's Navy. Though I'm fairly certain todays Skippers don't have half of the training and experience running naval vessel as they did back then to so maybe it's not a bad thing.

I'm a huge fan of us 100% pulling out of all of these middle east shitholes. No troops on the ground. At the same time make press releases and a statement from the oval office that we will leave them to their destiny - our days of nation building are over. That being said, if we intercept an active plot to committ terrorism on American soil or an attack goes off, we will rain hellfire and brimstone on a magnitude the world has never seen on the perpetrators. We will not invade, we will not put any boots on the ground, but we will make the locations that had anything to do with the terrorism into the world's biggest parking lots.

You're factually correct, but not because the military can't do it. Our society has become weak. Most can't stomach an actual full on war. We play by "rules" now.
This is true. We haven't been in a SERIOUS war since WW2, and honestly even going back to WW1 it's been about exerting our influence. We haven't been threatened on our native soil for over a century (Hawaii wasn't a state in WW2).
Every conflict we get into, we 'follow rules' because our opponent is faced with holding us off, and nothing more.
Going back to WW2- Japan showed the world what happens if you engage us directly. They hit a naval base a couple thousand miles from our shores, and we systemically beat their military back to their own country, and then began bombing it into oblivion until they surrendered unconditionally- while committing half of our forces to the European conflict.
That is why China won't touch Taiwan, or anything else out there. And why the USSR focused more on nuclear deterrent than trying to take more of Europe. We haven't been threatened since, we just punch people randomly on their territory. If the US were truly interested in conquest instead of being noble, I suspect we'd already own the planet by now, and just be quashing uprisings on occasion.

That's it in a nutshell. When it comes to war, we play by "Rules for me, but not for thee."
Of course the MIC doesn't really want us to win, so the wars all drag out and they can maximize profits.

I was on a DDG, this is an exaggerated statement for sure..We were there to find Subs and glass some sand palaces that we couldnt even find on maps

I will throw a downvote in that. That country is in the same spot as it was before we got there. AQ/OBL/Taliban or whatever the current flavor of oppression is. Our country is just as vulnerable as it was. Maybe a little safer because you have to take off your belt and shoes at some point to fly.
