Next up on California’s fight for equality…banning Clear, which lets you skip TSA lines

A new bill, the first of its kind in the U.S., would ban security screening company Clear from operating at California airports as lawmakers take aim at companies that let consumers pay to pass through security ahead of other travelers.
Sen. Josh Newman, a California Democrat and the sponsor of the legislation, said Clear effectively lets wealthier people skip in front of passengers who have been waiting to be screened by Transportation Security Administration agents.

"It's a basic equity issue when you see people subscribed to a concierge service being escorted in front of people who have waited a long time to get to the front of TSA line," Newman told CBS MoneyWatch. "Everyone is beaten down by the travel experience, and if Clear escorts a customer in front of you and tells TSA, 'Sorry, I have someone better,' it's really frustrating."
quote:
Newman is undaunted, describing his bill as an effort to improve travel for the majority of passengers.
"It's about dignity in the travel experience of people who don't have money to pay for upsell services," Newman said.
quote:
James Smith of booking site Travel Lingual said the bill at the very least "prompts a necessary dialogue" on how to best balance convenience and equity when it comes to navigating airport security.
"While Clear offers a time-saving solution for travelers willing to pay, concerns about fairness and the exacerbation of socioeconomic disparities cannot be ignored," he said.

They are just mad they don't get any money from it.
I don't see them banning toll roads.

Well I sure hope politicians never ever get special treatment.
It could hurt someone's feelings

Dumb... Clear just funnels their people into the TSA Pre-check line. Not the regular line. Anyone can get the TSA Pre-check done if you're willing to take the time to do it.... Well, most anyone.
And, oddly, its not wealthy travelers that I see using Clear.

honestly it’s fairly ridiculous that you can pay a fee and all of a sudden be less of a security risk. Hard to argue that it makes the skies any safer
yes I’m aware that there’s a background check. I had to go thru all that to get a TWIC. But 99.9% of the unwashed masses in the TSA line can pass a background check. It doesn’t mean shite

"Equity" magically will include all the same goals as climate change. Funny.

Clear is bullshite and shouldn’t be allowed to exist anyway.

Every time I use Clear I look upon the poors as I am escorted to the front of the line and I scoff and say, “Look here peasants waiting in line, I am better than you.”

Did anyone think to ask him why it can’t be ignored?
It feels like it could easily be ignored. In fact I’ve ignored it for years, and I don’t have clear.

Why not ban First Class on a plane? Think of all the frustrated people crammed in smaller cheaper seats, wishing that could afford a little more luxury.

Does CA still have the movie star line at DMV, where you can pay $25 or whatever so as not to be forced to associate with the great unwashed?

Is he gonna require the state to buy plane tickets for people who were planning to ride the bus to a different state?

All politicians are about filling their pockets.

Airline lounges next?
How about they look at the awful inefficient mess that government has created with the airline industry that things like TSA Precheck and Clear are even needed

Equality is everyone having the option. Equity is nobody having the option.
What Cali is doing is the latter.
