I have had to replace two ACs at houses I have owned (replaced the unit that was there when I moved in) and went Trane both times. I know the gentleman who did the installs and services my unit. Honest and very fairly priced.

In my mind there were only three options:

1- Lennox
2- Carrier
3- Trane

Trane would have been my first choice but it would have cost $3,000 more than Lennox. Kind of like choosing Michelin tires over Bridgestone I guess.

They are like cars.

one lasts for ten years

the next one off the line barely makes it to warranty.

I always spec'd Trane.I had no idea how to size them or draw the ductwork. Had a friend take that all on himself provided I spec'd him .....He bid everything based on the computer print out.

When I last priced it, it was just the opposite.

Couldn't have given them better advice! To minimize down time and issues, electing the best installer is way more important. Each brand has their own mechanical failures associated with them, they're machines.

I am in the HVAC industry and I installed a Ruud at my house (I am not a Ruud only dealer either, so it was by choice). I haven't had one issue in nearly 12 years. I also help my brother install units on the side and we have had minimal issues with Ruud.

That's good to know, thank you. I think I'm going with Ruud. I'd rather a quieter system but more than that, I want reliability. Biggest takeaway from all my issues over the years is to have it serviced every other year or so just in case.

You will hardly hear your Ruud outdoor condenser even running. I think you will be pleased with that choice.

If you’re not getting a variable-speed system it wouldn’t be a bad idea to throw a soft starter on it. In my experience, the soft starter makes the compressor quieter. I’m not sure how the voodoo magic works since it pulls itself out of the circuit after full speed, but my 2 units are crazy quiet, even an old R22 American Standard built in 2003. Love my micro air starters.

Get the cheapest one that matches the heating/cooling you need.

Don't go for variable speed blowers and all the other higher end stuff. As told by a previous poster, replacing variable speed fans is very expensive.

There are only 3 or 4 compressor manufacturers in the US and only one or two control board manufacturers so it's really down to the quality of service you get from the installer.

This - go to any professional HVAC message board, experienced technicians will universally state the most important factor in HVAC longevity & performance is the quality, and attention to detail of the install, with the equipment manufacturer being secondary. Rheem=Rudd, Carrier=Byrant, Trane=American Standard , Daikan=Goodman=Amana, ….. are all good units when properly installed & commissioned.

I would have no issue installing a Rudd or Carrier, although I changed out my unit last year with a Trane, but my decision was based mostly on the installing company and less on manufacturer of the equipment.

Ruud is basically a Rheem with a different name.
