Machaca Plate at La Tiendita. Scrambled eggs with shredded beef, mixed with sauteed onions and tomatoes, topped with cheese. Served with Mexican rice, refried beans with cheese, red and green sauce, flour tortillas, chips and fresh salsa. Sets you back $4.95.

Damn that's a deal.

The to-go menu says $5.95, but I've been eating that meal for years and only pay $5.40 including tax if I order it with a water.
The bakery next door has free Community Coffee if you get a pastry or cookie, but I'm usually stuffed before I can finish my rice and beans.

Fresh chips which are so easy to make in a commercial kitchen, yet Serranos serves crap from a bag before bending you over.

Serranos is in exactly last place of Tex-Mex restaurants I'd eat it in Baton Rouge.
Some of the taquerias in town are hit and miss with the chips, though. If you go when it's slow, you'll end up with the chips that have been sitting under a heat lamp for a few hours.

I've got to try this! Do they serve breakfast on weekends? I may have to go by tomorrow and pick up some more tamales, too...

They do, but I can't remember if they open at 8AM like they do on weekdays.

im a big fan of la tiendita, but mexican breakfasts (basically the refried beans) are too much for my gringo stomach to handle in the morning.
dont mean to hijack the thread, BUT afreaux, i know you have a done a list before of what you think the best thing at each mexican place in br is, link?

I'll concede that it takes some getting used to when eating refried beans, rice and tortilla chips early in the morning.

As this thread suggests, my friends and I grab breakfast at La Tiendita.
Panaderia Las Delicias is a Salvadoran bakery, but they make a great breakfast. Tamales de elote (sweet all-corn tamales), plus the best pupusas in town (corn cake stuffed with chicharron, beans, and queso con loroco cheese imported from el Salvador).
One of the best places to get lunch or dinner is Mi Pueblito on Siegen, in the strip mall across from Target. Good tacos, good carne asada, good burritos. The safe bet is to order barbacoa (brisket) tacos. But if you like burritos, the King Burrito at Tacos & Burritos Express is great.
My favorite taco as of late is at El Limon on Jones Creek. I'm not a big fan of the drive to get there, but they have $1.50 tacos, and they make their own tortillas. The best pork tacos (carnitas) I have ever had in BR. Cash only, though, three banks next door if you need an ATM.

thank you.
taco y burrito express is my go to mexican place with la tiendita right behind it. ive been on a huge tongue taco kick lately, so thats pretty much what i get when i go to either place.

I've had lengua a few times, but it's not really my thing. My go-to taco is usually barbacoa. Some taco purists will tell you that it's merely brisket and not a true barbacoa taco unless it's made from a cow's cheek.
There was a place called Tacos Monterrey on the corner of Sharp and Old Hammond that made the best tacos de barbocoa in this whole damn town. Sadly the guy decided to close down shop, I haven't had another brisket taco that good in BR since.

Afreaux... if you notice in last week's "One Restaurant You'd Like To Bring Back" thread I mentioned Tacos Monterrey. That place was awesome.

Those eggs look pretty good but the beans and rice look pretty generic. But for $5 I would eat the shite out of it.

I gotta get to some of these places soon, and get me some of your suggestions and some Tres Leche.

You have to have a visa to get in the place.
We have been going La Tiendita a few times a year since they opened, always good, but I'd have to take a day off if I ate a breakfast like that.
