or Salt Pepper Oak owner Vincent Hunt, becoming a TikTok-er wasn’t the plan or even an aspiration, but after going live in his Mississippi restaurant late one night while trimming brisket, he saw the results. People started tuning in, and as he livestreamed more, customers would come in from out of state because of what they’d seen online.

“I was hooked after that,” he said.

Now, he’s amassed nearly 125,000 followers on the platform and grown his business. He’s moving his business to 6721 Exchequer Drive, in Baton Rouge. The new location will be more than four times bigger than his Mississippi location. It will serve craft cocktails and eventually expand to breakfast. The grand opening will be Saturday, April 19, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Salt Pepper Oak started two years ago in Pass Christian, Mississippi, as a partnership between twin brothers Vincent and Andrew Hunt. The restaurant’s name is an homage to Anthony Bourdain, who once said “Salt, pepper, oak, period” during a YouTube video after taking a bite of a brisket.

Vincent Hunt has lived in Baton Rouge since 2007, and he commuted two hours each way to run the business three days a week. He’d drive out on Thursday and return Saturday.

“It was a test of my faith in my ability to really want this,” Hunt said. "Baton Rouge was the long game. I just didn't know how I was gonna get here."

Hunt is originally from Mississippi, and he knew that opening a business in his home state would allow him to try something new with the support of his old friends and family.
