We don't have a Popeye's in our small town, but ever so often I drive by one near Fort Worth. I've noticed the "Cajun Rice is Back" sign, so today I stopped for lunch. The chicken was okay and full sized (last time I had Popeye's chicken, it looked like they were serving tweety birds rather than mature chickens).

I have two observations about the Cajun Rice:

1. Much smaller serving - nowhere near what you used to get.

2. I think they've changed the recipe. I did not find this dish as tasty as I remember from the last time I had it a couple of years ago.

Even with the small serving I threw out about half of that dish.

BTW: they did get my order correct.

Not even close to same recipe. Got some with an order last week, I took one bite and threw the rest in trash...it sucked.

I was happy to see it back. It had zero flavor or taste. Completely bland.

I had the same experience last weekend as everyone else. Happy it was back on the menu, but it was bland, and definitely not the same as before.

I actually sprinkled some Tony's into mine just to give it some taste.

They used to have local Louisiana processors making a particular Tasso for the red beans and the Cajun rice. Then another local processor would grind the Tasso and other ingredients and make the mixes for the restaurants to use. Don’t believe the local guys are doing it any longer, but not sure.

They f@cking watered down the recipe, it tastes bland and dry now, and way higher rice to meat ratio.

Church's is better.

America has went to absolute dog sh!t.

1. Ask for dirty beans, they'll put red beans on top of the cajun rice. Or at least at my location they will

2. Drive to Morgan City and get the dirty rice from Danny's fried chicken, thank me later

I honestly never cared for their rice, because it always seemed a little bland to me. I do wish they would bring back the onion rings, though.

I find this to be the case with most of the Cajun/dirty rice that I’ve had.

I made some Coleslaw for a get together. People loved and made comments that it was just like Popeyes CS. A lady asked for the recipe.

Chopped up cabbage
Mayonnaise
Chopped dill pickle
Celery salt
Red wine vinegar
Chopped carrots
An insane amount of sugar plus more sugar.

I'll have to look on the bag in my freezer but I think the name is New Orleans creamy red beans. 5lb bag from PFG (Performance Food Group). That's Popeye's red beans now. If you know someone with an account (restauranteur) you can get them to order you a bag. I portion them into 1lb'ers and vacuum seal for the freezer.

You have a red bean knock off

Popeyes gets supplied by Diversified Foods, which was founded by Al Copeland in the 80s and bought out by Popeyes for $43m in 2014. There’s a plant in Madisonville (used to be in Metry) and have others across the country. They do not sell their product to anyone else

And the Cajun rice has not changed. NOLA area has never ceased selling it, and it’s the same recipe and portion
