I’m an older man who plays some games to keep my mind sharp. Don’t like games like Subway Surfers, but do like games that are more detective like. Any suggestions?

Most people here console or PC game.
If see if any of the Civs made it to mobile. Or Xcom
There are all types of strat games. What do you like that you have played before?

Disco Elysium might be something you’re interested in.

If he’s in my age bracket and was literally assaulted by the advertising for 6 months or more for Saturday Night Fever and everything else involving dancing and clothes, then everything remotely related to, much less titled, “disco” is off the table. The word sends shivers down my spine and invokes nausea.
I would suggest checking Steam for older games that phone tech has overtaken and become compatible with. Forget latest games, look for 10-20 year old games.

I’m obsessive having a mouse and keyboard for strategy games. However, the “Time Management” genre is about all I play on iOS. It’s planning and organizing, and it scratches the itch. The genre took a downturn over the last decade of new releases, but check out Diner Dash and one of the Airport Tycoon series.
Just thinking out of the box. Quick reaction times are less important than planning ahead, as I can’t deal with runners, etc either.

Might be worth it to pick up a laptop that you could play some better strategy games on as you're quite limited on the iPad.
Some iPad suggestions that others havent mentioned:
Total War: Medieval II
ROME: Total War (same company as above)
Northgard
Company of Heroes
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic (lots of reviews saying it needs an update for modern devices, but keep an eye on it. Such a classic)

I totally forgot about that genre. I've played plenty of them on iOS, but that's a good way to go too.
