We’re in the market for a new refrigerator, and an issue we’re running into is the size of the space for our fridge. The max cabinet height we can get is 68.25 inches. Width of 36 inches is fine. It’s the height that’s causing a problem.

With a family of four, we need at least 22 cubic feet.

Locating a fridge that fits our specs has been impossible.

How much am I looking at to replace the existing cabinet with something smaller? Is DIY possible? What questions am I not thinking to ask?

how many inches up do you need to move it and how many inches are there between the top of the doors above your fridge and the ceiling or crown molding?

honestly, if you have the space and take your time, it's not the hardest job.

Like an inch. The distance from the floor to the cabinet is 68 3/4 inches.

Cabinet is 26 inches to the molding, so that’s how much space there is to work with for the fridge.

I had to make room for some double ovens. Total cost was $560. Its finding someone to take small jobs that is the killer.

So you need to move it up about 1”? That really shouldn’t be a big deal. What I mean is you should be able to keep your cabinetry the same if you can remove the cross piece from behind and not damage it then the shelf. Then you can reinstall them at the correct height and adjust your doors up if needed.

Location and pictures would be helpful.
I have a carpenter I’ve recommended on here before in BTR. Great work and fair prices.

Post pics, surly some creativity with some trim could make it work

Also have you actually seen the fridge? Maybe it is just a hinge on top that requires that much clearance? Does the cabinet come all the way out? Mine does not

How in the world did you determine this?

I had a similar issue in a past house replacing an old range hood with a micro hood— a cabinet guy cut (insanely perfectly) the cabinet doors horizontally a few mm above the spot where the inner trim made a corner, shortened the doors and clamped/glued the bottom piece back on. It’s been too long to remember what happened to the actual cabinet box and how he addressed that but it was useless anyway for us. It was an easy and inexpensive fix (~$200) at a time when we were not prepared to get new cabinets or do big projects.

Buy a fridge that fits and put the old fridge in the garage. More than 22 cu ft capacity

Currently have a top freezer fridge with 20.5 cubic feet, and it’s too small. 22 seems like the next best step at a minimum. Most refrigerators (nice ones at least) are at least 24.

This. We have to have a counter depth fridge due to cabinets so we bought a regular cheap white fridge for the garage a few months ago. Works way better for us than the one larger fridge we had in our old house.

I just looked up a random fridge and it was 28 cu ft but 36 x 68.25 tall to the fridge and needed 70 for the hinges.

If that’s 28, how are you getting less than 22?

I don’t disagree though a standard fridge opening makes a lot of sense.

I’m not sure how your kitchen is trimmed, but removing your cabinet off the wall and replacing is mostly diy. You could do that, and take it to someone. That would likely be cheaper and faster than waiting on someone to come to you and do it. It just depends on your cabinet and how they screwed it in and trimmed it. It may be installed into the neighboring cabinets and have a lot of trim on top.

As said, a garage fridge or mini fridge for stuff like drinks and leftovers works well and is a $200 fix.

Care to link it? We haven’t found anything in that size.

I’d feel more comfortable doing the cabinet removal myself if I could see any evidence of how it’s screwed it. I don’t know if they’ve been painted so many times that it’s covered or if it’s some kind of custom built cabinetry.

Check the height of fridge in person , not on line, could very easily be the hinge is on top of the door and will be in front of your cabinet and if so you are good right now
