Can any of you woodworkers recommend a local place to get decent hardwood for a few projects? In the BR or surrounding areas.

Service Lumber near Coranta is one

I go to Service Lumber usually, but I’m not totally satisfied with them. They don’t like you to look through the pile, but sometimes they are more lenient and you can look a bit. They are geared to the cabinet shops.
A friend has recommended Brazos Forest Products in Denham and I may try them next.

I’ve also heard of Brazos but was wondering about others to try also. I haven’t done service lumber yet so I may see how it is

Riverside in New Orleans definitely worth the trip.

Agree with this. Another negative for Service Lumber is the boards come surfaced on two sides and one edge jointed. The boards usually have moved somewhat by the time you buy it and you still will have to joint and plane anyway. You're just starting with thinner stock. I'm pretty sure they sell it as 13/16 and charge as if its 4/4. Brazos is also a little more lenient with picking through the stack for home gamers who are just buying a few boards.

Brazos is great and as others have said u get true to size rough cut. They do have s2s as well.
Went to Acadian cypress in poncatoula for my last load and was very impressed. Super helpful and they have a lot of common stuff in front warehouse that u can pick through and load yourself then just check out by BF. When I went to brazos a couple months ago they wouldn’t let u go in warehouse.

Brazo’s has three other locations in Texas so they will bring in items if you need to order.
But I use Gueydan Lumber in Metairie. They have pretty much anything you need and will cut or rip anything as well. They run a truck to BR on Tuesday and Thursday as well.
Zachary Hardwoods has some nice stuff too but limited. I stopped going to Service a long time ago.

I’ve used Brazo’s a couple times and been pleased. It helps that it’s super close to my house too

+1 on Riverside. Lots of exotics, a small selection of hand tools (like Two Cherries chisels), veneer woods, and large dimensional cuts too.

is it common for a place to not want you to look through the pile? I have only been to one place in Houston for hardwoods and they haven't seemed to mind. they usually don't even have a worker in the warehouse.
I would hate feeling like I had to pick crap boards just because they were on top.

I've never experienced this. I have shopped Riverside Lumber in N.O. many times and always pick through the pile of wood to get the pieces I want with no problems.
I think as long as you respect the business and put back pieces you picked through and don't make a shite show of doing it, they're OK with it.
I've done the same at Gueydan on Airline Hwy. and Central Ave. in Metairie.

Acadian cypress in ponchatoula has a good selection on typical hardwoods. Some exotics.

Update: ended up going to Brazos. Good experience and cool folks. Would recommend for anyone looking for this. The hours are odd though so call before you go
