Its been a decade long journey for the LSU Gymnastics program , filled with thrills and the disappointment of falling just short of the title. They knocked on the door, rattled the door knob and finally kicked that son of a bitch in to the title room. The short term seminal moment for the program was when Kiya suffered a torn achilles. They could have folded the tent but rallied around each other. Three days later they took the number one team in the country to the wire and finished strong in making the Final Four. The bonds formed within the team were obvious and it was clear a new confidence had been planted.

They have finally won the title which eluded D D and so many great gymnasts over the years and in particular in the past ten years as we witnessed a wealth of talent gracing the Tigers and fueling exponential growth in the fan base. This current group had a terrific finish to win the title for this fan base , DD, Reagan, Bugs, Llamonecia, Sidney, Jessica, Sarah, Mya, Lexie, Mckenna, Kennedy, Shea and all the rest who formed the building blocks for a fantastic climb to the top. For the first time the team will enter the arena with the introduction as the defending national champions. This is not likely going to be their only championship considering the young talent on the team and the incoming recruits.

DD did for gymnastics what Saban did for football as far as into the spotlight and national prominence with state-wide super fans.

For years gymnastics was relegated to second class status until Skip put his support behind her. Its taken a while but they finally joined Georgia, Alabama and Florida as SEC and national royalty. The challenge will be to remain there.

I was just thinking a thread or post was needed recognizing those from the past that were the building blocks. Keep it going.......

DD retired, all the adulation is questionable.

Did anyone know that Jay Clark coached as the grinning DD clucked in sequins?

Woodward made her an offer she could not refuse, Jay Clark had to cope with her shadow, even as she was pushed aside.

Alas, he made the breakthrough and let Clark collect his just-due. It was not Cluck, IT WAS CLARK all along. DDB really needs to stop all her cameos and interviews, it is no longer her program!!

I imagine Pirate Queef is the one who downvoted this otherwise excellent post.

It must have really pissed you off to see Bertman and Mainieri in Omaha last season, after all, it was Jay's time.

I was only going back 10 years whe the program really took a n upward turn but there were stars before the who represented the program very well. Also need to include the greatest vault coach Bob Moore.

Sandra Smith shouldn’t be forgotten. Took LSU to the conference title and held every LSU record when she left.

Not to hijack the thread- I remember a 15 y/o Mary Lou Retton coming to Baton Rouge after she won gold in ‘84. It was quite the event. She won a car (or got a car for winning the gold (I can’t recall the story)) but was too young to drive.

In all the post meet noise, more than a few of the new champs were talking about how many alums were present. Along with the idiot with the championship belt he always waves.
