Smith's desire for Dybantsa to choose BYU is evident. He met twice with the teen's father, Ace Dybantsa, and financial adviser, Leonard Armato. Armato said one meeting, at Smith's office in Provo, Utah, lasted about an hour -- a significant amount of time for someone as busy as Smith, who has developed an image as the transformational engineer upgrading the state's sports profile.
quote:
"If they need my help, I'm going to help them," Smith told ESPN months before Dybantsa committed to the Cougars. "I owe everything to BYU and I'm not going to say no. And they know that."
quote:
"I'm not a donor or involved with BYU because I went to school there," Smith said. "I'm there because I owe them a lot. It would be crazy for me to be in this situation and not remember where I came from."
A billionaire alum that owns the local NBA franchise and employs as it's CEO the greatest basketball player in BYU history. All of a sudden they start buying their way into prominence and we're supposed to believe he's sitting it out?

NBA owners can’t be involved in NIL or Michigan State would have the Suns and Cavs buying every player in the Midwest.

If you think he's not the person writing the check, that's fine. You think he's not involved you're kidding yourself.

I would say it started a year or 2 before covid with the big 12 being the best basketball conference.

Alright frick it. Ill just accept lsu being terrible. Or at the very least I won't be donating to these shenanigans. What a joke for "amateur" athletics.

It’s your subconscious telling you that college sports doesn’t exist anymore.
This.
Let’s just call a spade a spade. It’s pro sports that are very loosely affiliated with local universities.

Shaq would never had been at LSU under NIL. I’ve been saying this since the beginning of the NIL and transfer portal that schools would emerge no one could fathom. Sounds like BYU hoops has decided to finally use the rules to win. Good for them. There will be plenty of others in football as well. We are still in the infancy stages. The days of having 100K stadiums being the deciding factor for recruits and cash in Burger King bags are over. Just wait until the truly rich schools decide to tap their resources. It will make many SEC schools seem broke in comparison. If Vandy decided too they could buy an entire class of 4 and 5 stars ahead of everyone else in the SEC.

I don't know about that. LSU basketball was the big man on campus then and Dale was dropping bags for the time period.

Ja'Marcus Russell at Yale

Are all these NIL figures we’ve been seeing per year?
Going to start seeing more and more college players stay in college, in all sports.

Coloring and counting to ten would suddenly be core classes.

quote:Meh, college sports are going to lose what's left of their charm/pageantry over the next few years and then you have what equates to a minor league with a bunch of overpaid amateurs. The whole thing is a house of cards. NIL/transfer portal lawlessness will create a huge pullback over time from fans and the profitability from greed goes bye bye.

What would Shaq have been worth at LSU?
That old joke from Baseketball about how Shaq didn’t make his money in Orlando, he made it in college, seems to have gotten a new life.
