Given the fact that this guy had a history of alcoholism and anxiety and depression and withdrew from the tournament the way he did, I am really fearful of where this might be going …

He’d been really vocal in the past about the PGA Tour not taking care of him when he was struggling with alcoholism and depression.

He won this year, and seemed to be in a much better head space, but depression is an absolute bitch and makes you feel like you have nowhere to turn. He got engaged this past year as well.

Regardless of how he passed, it’s awful news.

Absolutely. None of us is guaranteed the next 5 minutes but checking out at 30 is horrible. Prayers to his friends and family.

Here’s a Golf Monthly article from earlier this year. Seemed incredibly unlikeable early in his career (often the case when you’re struggling with alcoholism and depression) but he seemed so much more levelheaded and likable this year.

Why is that the Tour's responsibility?

That is a very good question.

Having depression and being a pro golfer seems like a bad combo. That game has to be really hard on you mentally

I don’t necessarily think it is. Was just speaking to his specific past with depression and alcoholism.

I probably could have phrased that better.

Why the frick is it the responsibility of the PGA to take care of his problems?

That is not the PGAs responsibility. Sorry I know that’s harsh but that’s the truth.

He said that on Twitter. This is the direct quote:

“No the pga tour didn’t force me to drink. But the pga tour never gave me help. In my 5 years of experience of being on tour not once have i ever had a request been acknowledged by the commissioner or the PAC other than ‘we will get back to you’.”

He also wrote this:

“Why was I drunk? Because I’m a f—ing alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.”

The PGA’s response to his post was:

“We can unequivocally say that the PGA Tour is a family, and when a member of that family needs help, we are there for him. That has been the case here and will continue to be.”

So maybe there was a difference of opinion, when he was in the throes of booze and depression, about help from the PGA. My view, admittedly I wasn’t there, is there’s help but there also can be unrealistic expectations of the scope of the help.

Youre right

The government response to covid exacerbated a lot of mental health issues

i don't know what the PGA tour meant when they said "family," but this whole thing kinda reminds of Jameis Winston's dad after Jameis won the heisman, and he kept getting in trouble. his dad said something to the effect of, "they always offer Heisman winners help," and basically tried to blame all of his son's troubles on the fact that someone didn't hold jameis' hands and actively try to steer him out of trouble

just a weird lifeview to hold and very unaccountable of everything

Yeah … there’s help as in “we will facilitate getting you into treatment so that you can address your problem.” IMO it is not out of line to expect the PGA or any other sports organization to do that. Hand holding or a shoulder to lean on or even cry on while the problem is being addressed? Bridge too far IMO.

The PGA tour isn’t in the business of treatment for mental health issues and alcoholism. If they facilitate getting players into treatment with trained professionals that is more than enough help.
