Sebastian Janikowski told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Sunday that after 19 seasons, he is retiring from the NFL at the age of 41.
"It was a good run. I still think of the Super Bowl -- it still hurts," he said, referring to the Oakland Raiders' 48-21 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII.
He told ESPN that he thought his body couldn't take the rigors of kicking in the NFL any longer.
Janikowski, nicknamed Seabass, made more money in his career than any other kicker in NFL history. According to Spotrac.com he made $53.29 million in his NFL career.
Janikowski signed a one-year deal worth $2.015 million with the Seahawks last year after spending his first 18 NFL seasons with the Oakland Raiders.
His 2018 season was a mixed bag. Janikowski went 22-of-27 on field goal attempts for an 81.5 percent conversion rate that ranked 23rd among kickers. Three of those kicks, however, were game winners as time expired, and he was 48-of-51 on PATs.
Janikowski made a pair of field goals in the Seahawks' wild-card loss to the Dallas Cowboys before injuring his hamstring while attempting a long field goal at the end of the first half. His absence forced the Seahawks to go for two-point conversions on their two second-half touchdowns as punter Michael Dickson handled the ensuing kickoffs.
A surprise choice as the 17th overall pick in 2000, Janikowski left as the Raiders' all-time leading scorer, with 1,799 points. Tom Brady is now the only player in the NFL from the 2000 draft.
Janikowski's 1,913 points rank 10th in NFL history, his 436 made field goals are tied with Jason Elam for ninth, and his 542 attempts are 10th.
His powerful left leg has booted an NFL-record 58 field goals of 50 yards or longer, including a 63-yarder in 2011 against the Broncos in Denver that tied the NFL record at the time.

Don't forget his record 77 yard attempt...

It's interesting. Janikowski played 19 years in the NFL and was a great kicker yet I would argue that he was still a bad pick by the Raiders. He ranks only 40th in Career Approximate Value among the players drafted in the 2000 NFL draft and the two players drafted right behind him (Chad Pennington and Shaun Alexander) finished their careers with a higher career value. The guy maxed out his value and still couldn't live up to his draft selection.

Adult film star Brooke Haven made an interesting revelation to TMZ earlier this week when she was discussing the various professional athletes she has partied with. The 34-year-old admitted that she has hung out with “a lot” of athletes, yet she hardly hesitated when asked who parties the hardest. The answer is Sebastian Janikowski.
quote:
“We were driving one time in the Navigator, I was driving, and he was smoking a cigarette outside the window or something,” she explained. “He was hanging out singing Nelly, and all of a sudden the next thing you know the inside of the car’s on fire. He dropped the cigarette down into the side panel of the door and all these papers are on fire. He takes them, throws them all out the window and says, ‘F— it. Keep going.’

Guy never took care of his body, it's amazing he's lasted this long. Oy a kicker could have.
He's an avid smoker and all-nfl party team as well.

His average is lower than other historical kickers but that's because between 2005-2015 the Raiders offense was, if we can get it past the 50, run a few times and then have Jano kick a 58 yarder.
He's 10th on the all-time scoring list for all players and made more money than any kicker in history.
He has a HOF argument, too bad he played for the Raiders during their worst run in history with some of the worst QBs to ever suit up in the NFL and a woeful offense.
Meanwhile Vinatieri played with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning and their offenses.

Jano probably averaged more kick attempts over 50 yards than any kicker the last 30 years.
Between 2007-2013 he attempted 70 FGs over 50 yards.
That's gonna bring your average down.
But the Raiders were desperate on offense and needed the points and would always roll the dice for those 3 points.
If Jano was on any other competent team, he's be a HOFer without question.
He's the Raiders all-time leading scorer btw, so to say he was a wasted pick is beyond bizarre.

When I was out west and an Oakland fan (200-2002) he got fricked up on X one night and somehow fell off a barstool and knocked himself out. Had to go to the hospital, made the news...pretty funny.

My college roommate for one year was a kicker at FSU. Got into some trouble with drugs and ends up transferring to Troy. His time at FSU overlapped a little bit with Janikowski. He told some wild stories of partying with him. Early in his career he was listed as out with turf toe. True story was that he had gone back to Tallahassee, maybe during an off week, and got drunk and rowdy and kicked a wall. My roommate also said that Seabass stole the tap to his keg. Any of you Miami fans might remember the name of the kicker for wide right 3. We’re playing his Xbox one night and he attempted a field goal and misses right. I stupidly said that’s appropriate that you missed it wide right. At the time I didn’t know he was the one that missed wide right 3. I found out shortly after that and felt horrible.
