Godzilla (1998) - Biggest Hollywood marketing campaign that resulted in a failure?

The soundtrack, the marketing campaign, the toy line, the teasers, the talk show appearances, etc all led everyone to believe this film was going to be a gigantic success in the vein of Independence Day or (which was also directed by Roland Emmerich) or Men in Black, etc.
But nevertheless, the film came in way under expectations. The CGI for Godzilla was beyond terrible and the casting was questionable, at best, with Matthew fricking Broderick as the lead.
If you weren't around then, you don't realize how big this film was hyped. It was on par with Jurrasic Park or Demolition Man as far as marketing. What happened though, is that the soundtrack had a much larger and lasting impact than the actual film... Which is pretty forgettable and borderline terrible. It also gave us the rise of Puff Daddy, who seems to be in the news lately....
uh huh... yeah

He was already very big before that. Biggie's rise and death are before this as well as Puff's first solo album.

The Taco Bell campaign was great

My friends and I was so excited for this that we went opening night. What a piece of shite this movie was/is.

It was just a bad movie.
Plot was bad... acting was bad... CGI was bad... portrayal of Godzilla was bad... I think you get the point.
I mean... This is Godzilla?

The Wallflowers had a solid song that came out of it.
Godzilla (1998) is when Hollywood learned you can’t take an iconic classic and attempt to modernize it. Like, you can’t turn Godzilla into Independence Day.
But for some reason Hollywood would continue to attempt this.

Roland Emmerich made 300 marketing partners all sign a disclosure that they would not show Godzilla in full in any promotional materials.
Looking back, if don't know if Emmerich knew the CGI looked like absolute dogshit and was trying to hide it or he actually thought it was good and was taking the JAWS approach and never showing the monster until he had to. Either way, it was very smart, but it still couldn't save the film once people saw it and word of mouth got out on how shitty it was.
Audience numbers dropped like 60% from opening weekend to second week.

I remember vividly seeing this in 98 as a 9 year old
Pretty sure there was a huge marketing campaign with burger king for it as well

I would have gone to see it twice had it been decent. I loved the old school Godzilla movies as a kid, plus I was 16 when this movie came out and was really getting into Led Zeppelin. The song riff was enough. I was hyped. Movie sucked. Like most here I saw it opening night and damn near walked out.
I did walk out of the one with Cranston in it for 5 minutes.

That was the best one in the last 25 years.
I haven’t seen minus one so take that with a grain of salt.

What’s funny is I actually liked this Godzilla a lot. But I also was never a Godzilla fan so I wasn’t attached to any particular style of movie.
It’s not fantastic cinema or anything. But I remember really liking it. I saw it in the theater.

It was still pretty bad.
The lead was fricking awful, which I attribute to the script, since he isn’t bad in other things.

All of the non-Godzilla scenes are actually tolerable. Not great, but very much in the mid-late 90s disaster film mold. The scenes are also shot quite well from an art direction and photography standpoint, but the acting is subpar at best, and the story is pretty terrible.
Honestly, the most impactful thing I remember is the Puff Daddy/Jimmy Page SNL performance of "Come with Me."
Its one of the best live performances ever on that show and it was extremely controversial because everyone said Page sold out Zeppelin by giving them the rights to Kashmir. I'm sure Page got paid a huge amount to do that, though, and so did anyone else who had LZ publishing rights.

I mean I was 10, so I loved it and I still find it entertaining.

Not a Godzilla junkie but I enjoy the movie. I was 10. Having 25 more years of existence since then and a little more Godzilla understanding….I can see why people dislike it.
Ultimately it’s just a monster movie set in New York and that is enough for me to enjoy it. Just isn’t that serious to me. Will probably watch it soon actually.

The best part of the movie was the goannas looking up at the mushroom cloud in the very beginning of the film. That’s how shitty the movie was.

I saw the movie but don’t remember the marketing campaign.
Posted on 3/31/24 at 7:48 pm to Jack Ruby
I remember wanting to see it because the ads looked awesome. But I do remember hearing that it sucked and lost interest.

this movie, much like the Firestarter remake would have been successful as a standalone movie.
but when you slap Godzilla or Firestarter on the name, and the movies have none of the material that made the originals great, then it is a massive letdown.
would the movie been better not named Godzilla? absolutely not, BUT it would not be as bad of a travesty as it is with Godzilla tacked on.
