The Insider starring Russell Crowe and Al Pacino

Don’t know how many have seen this. I listened to Russell Crowe on JRE a few weeks ago and I got interested in watching some of his stuff I had never seen. This is about Jeffrey Wigand, a tobacco whistleblower and how CBS went against the wishes of a 60 minutes producer and to some extent Mike Wallace in airing the interview.
I’ll just say as someone who abhors current day corporate media - as much as you hate them, you simply do not hate them enough. This movie sheds light on the deterioration of journalistic integrity in the mid 90s.
Movie also has some relatively local flavor. Includes Richard Scruggs - noted MS tort lawyer and Mike Moore who was the AG for MS for a bit in the 90s and 00s. Good watch for those who haven’t seen it.

Have no idea how old you are, but basically anyone over 30 would know of or have seen this film.
It was gigantic movie in 1999 and nominated for a shite load of Oscars. It was also essentially the last great vintage Pacino performance. After that, he started making shite like 'Simone' and became the cooky space version fo Al Pacino that we see now.
Crowe was already pretty known from LA Confidential, which really put him on the map.
Insider was also about 60 Minutes and Mike Wallace, which wers still extremely relevant in the late 90s. Michael Mann was also at his Apex after Heat and Mohicsns earlier that decade.

I long for movies like this one
I am sucker for political or corporate corporations movies. It’s genre that’s gone absent probably because the media has welded itself to mega corporations
, Mann actually films in Mississippi instead of trying to make Atlanta look like the gulf coast, New York, Kentucky. Instead of making Atlanta look like all three

Whatever you do, don't watch 2019's "Mr Jones". The true story about how leftists in the media (particularly the NYT) conspired to hide the Holodomor Genocide, that killed 10 million people, from the world. . .way back in the 1930's.
Makes you think ole McCarthy might have been on to something

Great movie and great performance by Crowe.
I've always believed he should have gotten Best Actor for The Insider. The Academy realized they fricked up, so they gave it to him the following year for The Gladiator. Then the next year he does A Beautiful Mind, but The Academy doesn't want to give him Best Actor 2 years in a row, so they give it to Denzel for Training Day.
Crowe should have gotten 2 BA's in 3 years, but yet he only got one for arguably his worst performance of the 3.

A 30 year old today was 5 years old in 1999. I don't think Mom and Dad were taking them to see The Insider.
