Why was the Unsolved Mysteries theme so scary?

Gary Malkin co-wrote the theme music to “Unsolved Mysteries” and knows firsthand just how scary it was to millions of viewers — especially kids who stayed up past their bedtime to watch the reality show in the ’80s and ’90s.
“We used to get letters all the time from parents saying, ‘Could you please change the theme music? Our children are terrified of it,’” he recalled during a recent phone interview.

It all began with the ostinato — the repeating rhythmic figure that gives the song its sense of urgent, inescapable menace — which he recalls hammering out on a piano. Then he added the “very scary” bass line.
The song also relies on an interval called the tritone. (It is, as Malkin puts it, “an exponential tritone extravaganza.”)
Also known as the devil’s interval or diabolus in musica, the tritone is a dissonant combination of tones that creates a sense of tension, ambiguity and instability, says Neil Lerner, a musicologist who studies music in film and television and teaches at Davidson College. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, religious music rarely used the tritone because it created a sense of unease and irresolution rather than majesty or awe.

UPDATE
Even that would scare the shite out of you--how they'd just spring that on you all sudden and loud-like.

I can remember watching it with my grandfather. I always liked the ghost episodes

Listen to the "metal" version of the theme.
It's awesome.
It's awesome.

I think it is PlutoTV or one of the other free TV apps that has an Unsolved Mysteries channel. It also has a Rescue 911 channel.
I still get creeped out from the Unsolved Mysteries theme....even now. Just gives me the creeps.

Robert Stack’s voice and that trench coat also scared the shite out of me.

I was legit scared I'd either be killed by a serial killer or beamed up by aliens and anal raped at any second thanks to that theme

The theme song freaked me out when I was a kid. Totally forgot about that until this thread.

Used to have so many nightmares as a kid because of that music.

My house was a typical single story floor plan with the bedrooms down a hallway. You had to pass my room and my brother's room to get to the hall bathroom.
My brothers and I would watch in the living room and I'd run like a little bitch past the dark bedrooms to pee. Two more bedrooms past the bathroom freaked me out.

I tried a while back, I just can't do it. It is like a bad acid flashback or something.

Add in the fog and the slow creepy walk and you have a perfect nightmare setting.

Almost exactly the same scenario for me, except it was passing by the bathroom with the bathroom window silhouettes en route to my bedroom. (Don't remember how I managed to piss, but it must've been a bitch... or I just held it.)
