The New World

1492: Conquest of Paradise

Ridley Scott couldn't make this subject into a hit. Terrence Malick couldn't either, coming off Thin Red Line.

Gibson is the only guy that has even halfway been successful in the genre, and it was an Indian story.

The beat "Conquistador" film may very well be The Fountain, but it is obscure as well to mainstream audiences.

Just don't think there's a big audience for the genre.

No. Too much material for a stand alone movie. Take Buddy Levy's book about Cortez Conquistador and make it a series on HBO. Awesome story.

I think I'll wait for the female-led reboot.

I dunno, it's more of a Spanish thing, than an Anglo thing. The demographics are changing.

The Mission (1986) is a (IMHO) underrated film of this genre.

Deniro as Mondoza

Irons as Gabriel

Chuck Low as Cabeza

Aiden Quinn and Liam Neeson also appear in smaller roles.

Because of the cast crossovers (and various aspects of the story), it feels like Excalibur meets Goodfellas in the New World at times, but also has kind of a Kingdom of Heaven vibe in spots as well.

Deniro and Irons are excellent in it in roles that deviate from what most folks expect from either.

I think that subject has more untapped potential than anything else I can think of. I’ve read a few books on this, and the conquests by Cortes and Pizarro are fascinating. There hasn’t been a movie made that does justice to this material. I’ve given up hope that a good, accurate conquistador movie will ever be made - especially in today’s social justice climate.

That's not really what I think of when I think of conquistadors. Wasn't it just John Smith and Pocahontas in North America, or am I thinking of a different movie? If it is what I'm thinking of, that is probably the most boring movie I have ever seen in the theatre. The previews made it look like it would be along the lines of Legends of the Fall with good action, great landscape scenery, and a love story. I just kept waiting on something to happen in the movie, kept waiting, then it was over

I’d love one but the SJWs would ruin it by creating a narrative of how the Europeans enslaved and killed the natives.

You wouldn't have to cover the entire Spanish exploration period. Just do a standalone from the perspective of one Spaniard who finds himself in the new world.

I would.

This was a great series:

In fact, all of Wood's documentaries are fantastic:

In Search of the Trojan War (his best)
In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great
The Story of India
The Story of England
In Search of the Dark Ages
In Search of Shakespeare
