20-year-old Southern University student was taking part in a fraternity ritual off campus when he collapsed and later died, a source familiar with the case said.

Members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity were reportedly carrying out a ritual where pledges stand in line when the student collapsed, the source said.

He was unresponsive when a group of friends brought him to Baton Rouge General Hospital on Bluebonnet Boulevard early Thursday morning, Feb. 27.

Hospital staff pronounced the student dead and called Baton Rouge Police at 3:15 a.m., triggering a death investigation.

UPDATE: Southern’s official statement (2/27/25)

quote:

Southern University and A&M College is aware of an off-campus incident that may have resulted in the death of student Caleb Wilson, a junior from New Orleans majoring in mechanical engineering. The campus community extends condolences to his family, classmates and loved ones. Southern is cooperating fully with the Baton Rouge Police Department, which is in charge of the investigation. No further information is available at this time. Counseling services are available for Southern University students, faculty and staff. Resources can be found at subr.edu/ucc.

UPDATE (3/4/25) Chris Nakamoto, WAFB
quote:

Sources with knowledge of the investigation into Southern University Caleb Wilson’s death told the WAFB I-TEAM Tuesday, the story that was initially told to police about Wilson collapsing at a Baton Rouge BREC park was fabricated. Sources said pledges with Omega Psi Phi were actually at a warehouse in Baton Rouge when Wilson was punched in the chest and collapsed. He was later pronounced dead by doctors at an area hospital. There were nine pledges in a line during an unsanctioned fraternity ritual and each one was allegedly forced to take blows to the chest, the sources said. When Wilson was hit, sources with knowledge of the events said he reportedly collapsed to the ground and began having a seizure at the warehouse.

Stranger things have happened. My cousin died during a frat event at LSU from drinking too much water.

Is it just standing in line? I read about a band hazing a while ago where they had to walk down a line of people beating them.

This will somehow bring about more restrictions on LSU Greek life

The black fraternities do magnitudes of order of hazing greater than white fraternities. But somehow colleges look the other way. Wonder why?

Not sure if BRG Mid City still has their ER open but that would be closest.

I will never understand how weak people can be that they will stand there and let another person "make" them drink themselves to death so they will be accepted into the cool kids club

Nope. Dr confirmed hyponatremia. They were running laps up and down the levee and chugging a gallon of water between laps. Developed severe water intoxication, went into a coma and died the next day.

So he died from standing in line? Yeah I'm not buying it. Unless he just had an aneurysm or something

You see, me and my homies like to play this game
We call it Amtrak, but some call it the train

We all would line up in a single-file line
And take our turns at waxing girls' behinds
