So he's not down but he's not up as much as he was? Sorry the 90% gains in 5 years isn't enough. Not sure what people are expecting. If I had 90% every 5 years on mine I would have an astronomical sum of money.

Imagine caring about a bad week for your 401k when you are decades from retiring

Unless you're retiring next month, who cares? That's what the market does - it goes up and it goes down day to day. As long as it goes up when you retire, that's all that matters.
Put it in a target fund, set it, and forget it.

Not sure why the down votes, you shouldn't be down in your 401k unless you're just starting out.
What calculations are using outside of more money was there last time I checked… regardless of what the market says

Supposed to cash out before crashes and get in before bull market, you did it backwards.

Just checked mine: minus 3.37% year-to-date, plus 0.76% last 12 months. My portfolio is split 50/50 stocks (indexed to the S&P 500) and bonds. Looking at retiring in the next 2 to 3 years.

Most 401k accounts are somewhat majorly based on the SP500 like voo or market like VTI. I'm sure if whatever app or account the OP uses has a 5,10 year or lifetime performance chart. I seriously doubt he is "down" but likely would be showing a massive gain.

401k...Has anyone else check theirs lately… I’m down 8500…

If he was about to retire he would be in bonds I would hope.

Being in 75% broad market index funds, 10% mid caps, 10% small caps, and 5% internationals isn’t active management or hard at all

The market is up 93% over the last 5 years. This is insanely good. Anyone with a 401k or IRA should not be concerned with fluctuations that happen in short term, e.g. last three months. This has been the case for decades.

Go ask the average American to define a "mid cap" or "small cap".

The could figure it out in about 90 seconds with a quick google search.

Unless you’re retiring soon why worry? Set it and forget about it until every few years

Really? Because it’s more expensive, pays less dividends, and consistently underperforms (by a lot) a simple S&P index fund
