Any thoughts on the Honda Pilot vs other 3 row SUVs?

I thought we were sold on an explorer. Then the wife had a friend with a pilot and she really liked it. Looking at them I see that 2 year old pilots still for almost what a new pilot cost.
I really wanted to look at the Pallisade/Telluride but they are all sold to the point you have to order them.
The highlander has a really small 3rd seat so that was the turn off there. That's the segment favorite.
I really like the pilot and was wondering if anyone here with them(2016-21 pilot or other similar 3 row mid size suv) could give thoughts or negatives on it vs the competitors.

My wife had a 2016 and it was crap. The palisade is nice. Also check out the Subaru Ascent.

Run away. The new one has major issues.
Pilot is a very good car, but the interior is a little dated.

The only problem with the Pilot- like many other three-row SUVs- is that you lose almost all your cargo room when you set up that third row. Unlike the Suburban or Yukon, the Pilot's third row is carved out at the expense of the rear storage area.
Also, the third row seating area is really only viable for smaller children. We had a Pilot for several years and we loved it but by the time my kids hit 13 it was hard for them to be comfortable back there.

We have a 2019 Pilot and the Apple CarPlay screws up all the time. There was also a transmission issue that we had to pay to get fixed bc it supposedly wasn’t covered under warranty even though it was a known issue.

I think the explorers with the 3rd row are pretty nice for family vehicle.
Has the room and not a massive gas tank and engine

Never driven one but I would think the Pilot would be on the smaller side for a 3 row SUV

I sell cars, Pilots and Highlanders are entirely interchangeable in my mind. Two different companies' interpretations of the exact same thing.
If you don't like the tight third row in a Highlander, you probably would have the same issue with a Pilot.
Since interior space seems to be a concern, I'd recommend either a 2018+ Traverse/Enclave or a VW Atlas. All 3 are vast inside.

Looked at every SUV on the market in 2016. Chose the 2016 pilot EX-L.(also because like you said, a 2016 was not much more than a 1-2 year old used pilot.)
We had 2 kids at the time and it worked great for us. The 3rd row wasnt bad for adults to sit in. That only happened once in the 4 years we had it. It was a great reliable vehicle. we bought it brand new and traded it in on a 2020 honda odyssey in Jan of this year.
the only con (total first world problem) was the connectivity of the bluetooth. It wasn't automatic. It had to be done manually every time.

Just bought my wife a new SUV and it came down between the Pilot and the Telluride.
The Pilot definitely had more extras than the Telluride, but I hated how the Pilot drove.
We went with the Telluride mostly due to how it drove and the style, honestly. My wife couldn’t get over how much the Pilot looked like a minivan without the minivan features.

If you’ll use the third row often you’re better off just getting a Tahoe or a minivan

We went with the Buick Enclave due to storage behind the third row. Had the most room in that size suv

We were deciding between the Traverse, Pilot, and Dodge Journey and the size of that third row was what make us go with the Traverse. Pilot and Journey were just too small. It was 6 years ago and both my kids were under 10 but we drive cars until the wheels fall off and we knew we’d have teenagers before we got rid of the thing.
I’ve had some mechanical frustrations with the traverse but the bigger 3rd row has been great.

Honda makes a great vehicle, but it is like driving a refrigerator. I could break an Explorer or that Subaru thing. I think the Highlander is just Camry with a higher roofline. I would be afraid to tow my boat with it. I like my Tahoe.

Just did a 1200 mile road trip last week in the wife's 2020 Traverse. Highly recommend if space is of concern, the thing is a cavern and very comfortable inside.

My wife drives an '18 Pilot Touring edition. No problems at all with it

My mom just bought a pilot and I've ride in it a few times. I would drive it.

My brother moved from a Honda Pilot to a Ford Explorer....said the Pilot's reliability, quality did not live up to the 'Hype'.
He says they are very happy with their Ford Explorer.
He's always been a Toyota/Honda fanboy. I guess this says something that he didn't go that direction and instead bought the Explorer?
