My oldest went to Mayfair and BRHS until we moved. I feel his education was better than what the surrounding areas provide. Systems like Zachary, Livingston, etc. really teach to the test and not teach to maximize the students potential.

That's overblown in my opinion, but stereotypes do exist for a reason. I do believe that the school is left leaning. I'd agree with you there.
The purple and pink haired kids absolutely exist, but there were maybe 4-5 out of 430 at graduation.
It's definitely not a good fit for all kids.

That’s good. I lived there for elementary, LaSalle and Audubon, years ago. And recall the middle and high schools and neighborhoods being good. We moved, but family still there and although folks knock BR, it’s home to me. Always feel at home on that side of town.

Calling U High a public school on the OT is like saying Big Lee lived in Old Metairie

It always makes me laugh when people call UHigh a public school.

It's a public school if your kid can run a 4.3 40, you're an LSU admin, or if you are politically connected

If you love your child, do not do this.

Funny quip from my daughter who graduated from Baton Rouge Magnet in 2008.
Me: “ where did you finish in the class?”
Daughter: “uhh,18th.”
Me: “18th!!”
Daughter: “Well, second, not counting Indians and Asians.”

Hell no. Taught in EBR years ago. Hell on earth.

quote:Honestly, I have no idea what you are talking about? Maybe it’s because my kids were in the AP and honors classes there? A good education is available at Dutchtown if you want to get it. Two of my kids scored 34s on their ACT and my last kid scored a 33. All three of them said college was/is easy because of their preparation at Dutchtown. I’d stack my kids academic accomplishments against any of their friends that went to private schools in BR. My middle child has several Dutchtown graduates with him in medical school right now. Dutchtown is a really good school. The honors program is a school within a school. I figure I saved over 200K on private school tuition. Also I didn’t pay a dime for my kids college because they all got scholarships.
Dutchtown is a zoo. It might be a level 3 zoo and not a 5 like Tara or G Oaks.

Christ, no. I think Mayfair is OK but I'm pretty catholic. But high school? None.

quote:The amount of resources in Ascension Parish for these kids is unreal. My kids were more college preparatory, but my kids had friends coming out of Dutchtown with associate’s degrees and trade certifications from RPCC. If they are highly academic my kids took a 2 hour calculus class, 2 physics classes, 2 chemistry classes, 2 biology classes and so forth. Catholic schools you use one class on religion every year so they have less electives to choose from. Catholic High is a terrific school. Dutchtown is also a very good school and is free.
This is why I live just across the parish line and send my kids to Dutchtown HS.

Never.
And I know there are some one off good schools here and there - I hear from people I like that they really enjoy Mayfair, but the thought of entrenching them into a school that is run by the people on the ebrpsb, and taught by teachers in the union - i'm out. Chances are if/when things go bad you sre stuck bc the wait list for the private schools is so long.

When it first opened, it was marketed as “Similar to BRMHS but focused science and engineering”
But then they couldn’t fill the seats so standards were lowered

This. Baton Rouge private schools exist for the segregation and not the education. I say that as a graduate of an EBR parish private school.

I have seen an increase in the number of black students recently. I have a theory that proof of residence isn't being checked very closely. There seems to be an increase in Baton Rouge looking kids in just the past few years. I'm leaning towards it having something to do with the past few principals there.

None. Even BRHS is not what it used to be.
Suck it up and pay private.
