An armed gang has surrounded a hospital in Haiti trapping women and children before they were rescued by police, the boss of the medical facility has said.

The gang was torching houses surrounding the Fontaine Hospital Centre in the capital of Port-au-Prince, preventing anybody from leaving, the medical director, Jose Ulysse, told the AP news agency.

He had said earlier that the gangs had appeared to enter the hospital - and pleaded for help on social media.

Police responded to his call and managed to evacuate 40 children and 70 patients - including children on oxygen - to a private home in a safer part of the city, he said.

The community in the sprawling Cite Soleil slum has become overrun by gangs that have unleashed increasingly violent attacks.

Civilians in the area are routinely raped, beaten or killed.

The history of Haiti is hilarious:

1) kill all the whites
2) kill everyone that even acts vaguely civilized cause they’re white-ish
3) attempt to invade the Spanish side of Hispaniola without guns, lose by a casualty margin of 60:1
4) 150 years of chaos and starvation, up to present

Haiti is a cautionary tale.

Is anyone paying attention?

Unless you’ve been there, you cannot comprehend how poor and desolate that country is.

true, and that's also true in many places in world, our ghetto, welfare state has NO idea of what real poverty is

ETA: we fly to Haiti, no over nights there though, we had a plane down there years back while an earthquake occurred, they were going to shut the airport down and evacuate it, the captain said frick that, made sure he had been fueled and just blasted off, he was not going to get stuck in Haiti

there's a book by Michener, "Caribbean?" that talks about that, and even though it's a fiction book it's considered to be an accurate history of the Caribbean, and you can see this throughout the islands, the "quality" of slaves went down as the traders hit the windward islands with boats full of slaves, the best were sold first and by they got to Haiti/Jamaica, here, they were down to the dregs

Law abiding Haitians are not allowed to have guns.

Any semblance government is non-existent in most of Haiti these days. It is now controlled by gangs, and these aren’t organized gangs. They are basically roaming bands of psychopathic criminals looting and raping.

I had a friend years ago who was going to Haiti on a mission during his vacation. Our SVP said Tahiti? No Haiti. The SVP said why the F are you going to Haiti?

My friend never went higher.

It’s what happens when a population grows too fast for the resources it has. It used to be a beautiful tropical island. Imagine if the population were only 10%, they could thrive on tourism.

Dominican Republic right next door has a similar population but is in much better shape. Population growth/density isn't the problem.

My mom’s good friend runs a homeless shelter in Philadelphia, and she took one trip to Haiti and the lady said never again

A good friend of mine served there while she was working for the UN. The poverty is heartbreaking.
