The Cavanaugh Flight Museum of Addison, Texas, noted curators and caretakers of one of the nation’s foremost airworthy collections of historic aircraft, announced its impending closure via Facebook today, effective January 1st, 2024. The Museum, founded in 1993 by businessman Jim Cavanaugh, had recently experienced conflict with authorities at their home base of Addison Airport (ADS), though in the announcement, the Museum did not provide any additional details. Vintage Aviation News is following this story and hopes to glean greater clarity soon.
The Museum’s collection of historic airplanes from both World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam, established Cavanaugh’s stature on the warbird scene with a retinue of legendary Allied fighters and bombers, as well as less common types such as the CASA 2.111, a variant of the Heinkel He 111. We anxiously await further details about the future of the museum and their historically significant collection of warbird aircraft.

This was a great museum. When I lived in Addison several years ago, I volunteered as a docent at the museum. They sponsored Commemorative Air Force airshows. I, for one, will miss this attraction.

Addison used to have great city government. Too many obnoxious people have been elected or appointed to boards.

Do they offer flights? That could be the “conflict” they mentioned

Sorry to hear that. The Cavanaugh Museum was an interesting place to visit.

I lived in Addison for a while. The Cavanaugh museum had some amazing aircraft, and a large majority of them were still able to be flown. In fact they would fly a bunch of them July 4th every year.
It was much better than Frontiers of Flight.

Didn’t realize there were two different museums in Addison.
I’ve been to frontiers of flight and like it, but never went to Cavanaugh.

It all went to shite when they changed the name from Confederate Air Force.

One of the local DFW newscasts did a segment on the closing of the museum. They say no one has stated why it was closing.
