The 19-year-old Walmart employee who was found dead in the store’s walk-in oven in Canada was discovered by her mother, who also worked there, according to a community fundraiser for the family.

The teen was identified as Gursimran Kaur, according to a fundraiser organized by the Maritime Sikh Society in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on behalf of the family. “On Oct. 19th, the fateful Saturday night, she was found burned to death in the walk-in oven at Walmart bakery,” the fundraiser said.

Halifax Regional Police said they were called to the Walmart at 6990 Mumford Rd. at 9:30 p.m. and found the young woman's body in a “large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department.” Kaur and her mother had worked at the Walmart for two years, according to the fundraiser.

That evening, Kaur’s mother tried to find her after not seeing her for one hour. She asked around and tried to call her to no avail. “Mother started panicking as it was unusual for [Kaur] to switch her phone off during the day,” the fundraiser said. “Imagine the horror that her mother experienced who herself opened the oven.”

Why would a "walk in" oven lock in the first place? That seems like a no brainer to have a way out from inside. When working at a place that had walk in freezers in my youth, they were able to be opened from outside and inside. They were also not lockable.

Remember the woman not long ago in New Iberia ? Stuff happens.

Sometimes parts are missing for whatever reason.

Stories like this wrench my soul from my body. Some horrors shouldn't have to be endured. The world can be an unforgiving place. May my daughters live until they are ancient and wrinkled.

That’s absolutely heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine the pain her mother must be going through. It’s one of those stories that really sticks with you.

Didn't the same happen at a fast food joint here in the last year?

ETA: Arby's

quote:

Nguyet Le, 63, was temporarily managing the Arby's in New Iberia, Louisiana, where one of her children also worked. It was her son who found her body in the freezer on May 11, according to the family's lawsuit. "The investigating officer relayed that inside of the door of the freezer had been bloodied leading him to conclude Ms. Le panicked once locked inside and beat her hands bloody trying to escape or get someone's attention," the lawsuit reads. "Ultimately, she collapsed into a fetal position face down on the frozen floor. The preliminary autopsy findings were hypothermia as the cause of death."

I’m struggling to comprehend the pain the daughter must’ve went through

A story I saw said the over does not lock. Maybe there was foul play involved?

I can't imagine the door cannot be opened from the inside. They have to be looking at foul play here, right?

Maybe Canadian regulations on this aren't as good as the US. I find the idea of a human sized walk in oven without an emergency exit appalling.
