Why do female softball players wear these stupid looking things?

I understand batting, but fielding?

Because they are smart. There are so close to the batter when they pitch it only makes sense.

Maybe because they stand 10 ft from the batter?

What a buffoon. You’re comparing softball to baseball when they are completely different sports. You’d be better off comparing women’s fast to men’s slow pitch and in competitive men’s slow pitch, the pitchers typically wear a face mask and sometimes a full helmet with shin guards. So no only did you make the wrong argument but if you had made the right argument, you’re still giving a bad take.

You may need to check the undercarriage before making a determination here

Well that’s the reason they have to wear the stupid looking face masks right?

A slow pitched softball is far more dangerous than a fast pitched baseball - why else would they make females wear these stupid looking things?

In his defense, the freaking shortstop is wearing one too.

The real question is, how much time does the pitcher have to react once the ball is hit. A quick search showed that it is roughly the same between baseball and softball, with baseball actually having a little less reaction time for the pitcher.

So the OP does have a point.

A softball is larger than a baseball and the fielders are closer to the batter.

Take a softball and a baseball to the face and let me know which one hurts more

43 feet.

That's the distance from the pitching rubber to home plate. Hitters are getting better and better, pitchers are throwing harder, and there is minimal reaction time.

There is no shortage of videos out there of pitchers getting hit in the face by a line drive. Bet your arse that if I had a daughter she would wear a mask if she pitched, and she wouldn't play for a coach who refused to allow it.

You shouldn't be comparing men and women in this instance in a day and time where we have baseball players running the bases with oven mits on their hands.

Using an exception to make a point is rarely a good argument. Watch any fast pitch game and the SS is likely not wearing a face mask.

up thru the 80's many hockey players didnt wear a helmet. for years after helmets many didnt wear a mask...

now they all do, men & women

there is no reason not to wear a mask in the field and many reasons to do so
