To expand into the downtown area. They already have the water campus & that area around it is pretty nice. Would love to see all that continue to expand but toward LSU

They had secured a lot of federal funding to cover the construction and running gear for a very modern streetcar (similar to Houston's) between LSU and downtown. That happened under the Holden/Jindal administrations.

Broome shut it down when she took office because it didn't involve north Baton Rouge. She instead pushed far less federal funding towards a rapid bus line on Plank that has still not yet been built.

So the bank took back the land those developers bought around Magnolia Mound. And nothing has been done ever since other than the small scale gentrification a block or so at a time north of campus.

BRCC did a good job connecting with universities so when they leave BRCC they auto enroll into one of the schools they are partnered with. Not to mention, it’s cheaper.

Unless you’re majoring in something very specific and specialized or want to live on campus, I highly recommend going with a CC for your first two years.

Did that myself and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Not sure what LSU’s includes.

Over 37K at the Baton Rouge campus. No idea what it is system wide.

So the off campus apartment buildings are also chock full of students.

Costs of attending LSU will go way up if the housing issues aren’t addressed. Baton Rouge needs better leadership. Some areas with affordable housing are off limits to students because of crime concerns.

LSU’s Baton Rouge campus was 29,000-31,000 in the years that I was enrolled.

I know they’ve done a lot of construction since then, and now have 37,000 on campus. It’s crazy to imagine than LSU could top 40,000 within 5 years if this trend continues. I can’t imagine how busy everything must be there now.

They really need to start building more parking decks and start looking at expanding amenities, dorms, and classrooms again. Maybe not a great time to demolish some old dorms either.

Which we’ve seen more and more of within the campus not just the city in general.

The community college thing does not surprise me. I worked with a few dudes who got engineering degrees at Penn State. Most started in the Penn State satellite system and transferred in. It was cheaper.
In College Station, Texas A&M has over 70 thousand students. Think about that.

Could this be an economy thing?

No, it's two things.

Firstly, since COVID, there has been a trend away from the smaller, regional universities that basically overreacted and all but shut down the bulk of their on-campus services during the peak of the pandemic; the larger schools stayed (mostly) open.

Secondly, LSU won the 2019 football national title (evidence indicates schools with good football programs are attracting more students; the University of Alabama has basically doubled in size and become 51% out-of-state students since Saban arrived on campus while Texas A&M also ballooned in size after hiring a national champion-winning coach away from Florida State). Heck, even back in the 1980s we saw a little of this trend as Southeastern Louisiana University instantly lost 15% of its student body after it dropped football. They made a point to prioritize bringing back their football program again as soon as possible.

Or maybe because black people were not allowed in white colleges?

Why just BRCC? Why not look at SUs as well? I imagine the rates for southern will be just as bad, if not worse.

Those scores are going to be low as well. I'm just making the point BRCC may have a high enrollment, but what happens to those students at schools like BRCC and SU matter more.

They've built or expanded at least a dozen academic buildings in the past few years. And they must have finished out 1,000+ dorms since then. But those usually come at the expense of parking spaces.

They build that one parking deck at Union Square at then shelved plans to build 3 more because it was ugly.

the 10 year master plan has a parking garage by parker and Highland, and another by TS near the public safety building.

So this is why LSU is so stingy with awarding academic scholarship money

While the area around BRCC isn’t great, it isn’t a fricking war zone like the area around Southern.

Main people I know who attended Southern did so because their program (nursing, law, etc) had seats there as opposed to LSU, Southeastern, etc. People don’t tend to go there if they have any other options.
