As a related topic from reading the thread about us driving vehicles much longer, when it's time to get a tune up, what all do you look to get done?

One of our vehicles the kid drives is now 12 years old and has 136K miles on it. It's a Honda, so we are going to keep going with it. What all should I have the mechanic do when we go in for a tune up? I know changing the spark plugs, timing belt, etc.
I'm sure he's going to suggest all kinds of stuff like draining fluids, etc. Probably only want to keep the vehicle another year or two, so I'm not sure how far to go with this service.

This is going to sound sarcastic, but read the owner's manual in the glovebox. All of that, specific to that car, is in there. It really is a wealth of knowledge.

I thought a tune up was a bump of coke.

You can find arguments online both for and against changing the transmission fluid. I went ahead Im and got it done. I chose the drain and refill option over the flush because I read that the flush can be damaging. I had to wait 24 hours for the shop to get the OEM Honda fluid but then the dumbass threw in n additive that he added ‘at no charge’ to me as bonus. I really didn’t want that shite and was aggravated about it but it was too late at that point.

I had no transmission problems for the next 30k that I drove the car.

I have no real knowledge on if this was a good idea or not. Someone please enlighten me.

Thanks Captain obvious. LOL.
I know about this and I could of course google it. I have found that the owners manual suggest doing too much stuff and at too frequent intervals.

Not a mechanic but have a bad habit of buying and fixing BMWs. You don’t tune cars anymore, but plugs would probably help and maybe a good valve blast if the vehicle is direct inject. I would replace the crank case vent plumbing on most vehicles about this time as most have a pretty ratty design for the duty they see.

If you want to keep your vehicle for a long time change the oil more often than recommended, if they recommend doing it at 5k, do it at 3k.

Timing belt and tune-up are two separate things, if it's the recommended time for the timing belt, get it done. Have them do an oil change, do not flush and change the transmission fluid this can be problematic for older cars, if it shifts fine leave it be.
Oil change, filters, plugs ( if needed ) and timing belt. In all prob a 2k job.

Does it have a timing belt or chain? One needs changing, the other doesn't.

Spark plugs and wires; Oil; radiator flush (or just drain and fill); check power steering fluid (easy enough to replace); transmission fluid; etc.
As someone said, check the manual. All that stuff is easy to do yourself and will save so much money compared to the shop

So the person who came to the OT for "Tune Up" questions read the owner's manual and came to his own conclusion that he knows more than the owner's manual and the next move should be to ask the OT.

Can't make this up

find the maintenance schedule, it will tell you exactly what to do at different mileage intervals instead of some random guessing game youre playing

Is “tune up” still a thing? Just follow Manufacturers recommended schedule. Worked on my wife’s Honda which was at 200k miles before getting into a accident, would probably still be running today if not for the idiot who ran a red light

I think you can see already from the responses on here that there are varying opinions on several things about what really needs to be done and when/how. Thanks for your input though.

And yes, in my very limited knowledge, the dealership via the owners manual, wants to get you into the shop often. And no, after a vehicle gets to be a certain age, I'm not going to the dealership for any services if I can help it.

For Honda If it’s a 4cl after 2008 it has a timing chain. If it’s a V6 from 08-17 it’s a belt. Definitely don’t change the timing chain unless there is an actual issue. You need to read the manual to see the interval for the timing belt change if you have the V6

with everything now run by the computer, a tune up is simply done by replacing the spark plugs and plug wires, there is literally nothing else to it.

now you also should clean the throttle body by spraying it with throttle body cleaner and MAF sensor with maf sensor spray cleaner, because unlike carb cleaners, they are made different so they are safe to spray on the sensative areas with sensors. if you spray carb cleaner on throttle body or maf sensors you ruin them

do this. There might be some things that can be done better than the schedule but there are also some things that can be done worse to. Figuring out the difference is not east to sus out.

Really the best thing would be to find a quality independent mechanic that you can trust and ask them. Easier said than done but then you aren't having to source info from an internet forum from people who regurgitate some garbage info they heard from some idiot brother in law.

Is it true that Hondas burn more oil than other cars?
