What is a rare, but frightening medical condition that you’ve heard of? I’ll start. Fatal Familial Insomnia. It is a genetic and progressive disease that affects the thalamus in the brain, where a person can literally no longer sleep. The disease comes in stages and is always fatal, about 6-36 months after symptoms begin. There is no cure or effective treatment.

To me, this is extremely disturbing because when a person is diagnosed with this disease, all they can do is wait to die and never fall asleep again.

My cousin has fibromyalgia and it’s terrifying to see

When he has his medicine he is ok but when he runs out he has cold sweats, aches all over, diarrhea, almost flu like symptoms. The doctors refuse to give him enough medicine to manage his symptoms so he has to go to like 8 different doctors. It’s really sad to see

Creutzfeldt-Jakob prion disease. Basically you ingest a malformed protein and your brain replicates it which is terminal. Same as mad cow disease.

Huntingtons disease also

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare, fatal, and rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by prions.

Prions are infectious proteins that cause normal brain proteins to misfold, leading to brain damage and ultimately, death.

Symptoms typically include dementia, muscle twitching, and balance problems, usually progressing to death within a year.

Well, that’s terrifying.

LiS - Locked in Syndrome

Cleveland Clinic

Locked-in syndrome (LiS) is a rare and serious neurological disorder that happens when a part of your brainstem is damaged, usually from a stroke. People with LiS have total paralysis but still have consciousness and their normal cognitive abilities.

This one scares the frick out of me, especially with the amount of deer meat I eat from CWD areas. It can't spread to humans but who knows what it might do. I think it was 10 or 15 years from the discovery of BSE to when the first human was infected.

I was coming to post this one. That one seemed the be the most terrifying disease I learned about.

The second one is Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS). Which is an over production of uric acid.

Delayed motor development.
Involuntary muscle movements (dystonia, chorea, ballismus). Intellectual disabilities. Aggressive and impulsive behaviors. Self-injurious behavior (e.g., lip biting, finger chewing, head banging.) The way this was described is that they have to strap patients to their wheelchairs because they were causing so much self harm.

In some cases, deep brain stimulation or tooth extraction may be considered to reduce self-biting.

Jesus. They pull teeth to prevent injury from lip biting. At least this one is genetic so it doesn’t just appear one day and you die within a short time.

The scariest part of CJD is the most common type is sporadic. Which does not come from the hereditary component or ingestion of a malformed protein, but arises spontaneously from a misfolded protein. There's a small handful of cases diagnosed every year even in Louisiana. The incidence rate is roughly 1 in 1 million.

Rapidly progressive dementia (RPD) refers to dementia that progresses Very fast and can kill you in a few months. My MIL was affected with dementia and within a month was definitely batty, then often asked where she was and what she was supposed to be doing? She moved to saying that she didn’t know who she was, and went through hours of just being quiet (used to be a big talker), then was tortured by repeated unexplained thoughts and movements. She was dead in 3 months. Very sad!
