Why do people care more about pets than other humans

I hear comments such as, I care more about my dog than I do most people I know. Or I hear, how could anybody ever harm an animal. When hypothetically asked some people would choose to save their pet over their neighbor. You can watch on YouTube a video of a cat eating her kittens like nachos. Or find plenty stories of dogs eating their owners face off or mauling them. Cats and Dogs will kill basically anything they can for fun. But yet some people still place them equal or above other humans.
Is this just another sign of the downfall of humanity?

Pets love unconditionally, typically love everyone, and tend to be lower maintenance.

A lot of people confuse the loyalty of a pet with the love of a person.

I’ve never had a dog come up and give me a bullshite story on why they needed my money, and then get aggressive when I didn’t give it to them.
