We should move to a system like Europe where you can round up to the next dollar if your bartender was taking care of you.

Have to convince restaurants to start paying their staffs a fair wage first.

Let’s call it toxic tipping culture and get rid of it once and for all.

Tipping is an American thing. Nothing like it in most other places in world.
Only because not paying servers a normal wage is also an American thing.

Change the fricking law that servers get regular wages like every other damn job. Tipping is fricking stupid for lots of reasons. Elon needs to get the damn robot servers built asap.

(Good. Tipping when just drinking should be minimal anyway.)

Agreed that tipping culture has gotten ridiculous, but...tipping at a restaurant or bar isn't a part of the knew phenomenon. If you sit your arse down to eat and or drink and you can't afford a decent tip, you should stay home. Including if your home isn't in the US.

Do you even know what amount your tip is based on or you just gladly toss 20+% regardless of service because it's not "knew" to US culture?

I wish someone would start a tipping by the hour movement! $20/hour seems fair especially when added to pay.

I like this to save money when I'm in Rome and Athens before and after my Greek Isles cruise in August.

There's a difference on what you are tipping on. My first trip back to the US after a couple of years in the EU sent me immediately into price shock. Tipping on a shitty pile of food is just expected now. I get a million times better service at restaurants in Europe with a final bill that is somehow less than what I would pay before tax in the US much less a fricking 20% tip on top. It's the biggest con being played in the states these days.

Americans are just stupid enough to start and maintain this tip culture. It’s fricking retarded. Just raise the restaurant prices if you need to—I’m not paying for your fricking employees.

and the overall lack of trashiness, everyone friendly, pleasant, and polite

You don't need to pay for their work force, just fund their tax evasion.

I still tip because of the death stare and I don’t want to be judged by those around me. But this is not some fricking charity, pay your employees, especially now that tips are not taxable.

We have too many restaurants anyway, so cool with eating into your margins.

ame could be said for comparing the sale of a Subaru to a Ferrari but the commission is different for both. Lots of sales jobs are compensated by commissions.

I don’t disagree, I just think 20% of the price of the dish seems ridiculous. The waiters don’t sell me anything, they hand me a menu. A percentage of the price as a “tip” is crazy.

I’ve never been anywhere in the world where people refused to take my money. Even in non-tipping cultures, staff semi-solicited tips. International tourists are a 70/30 when it comes to tipping in the USA. In my youth I worked at resorts in various states during the summers. In the resort towns I split time in now they mostly have a server discretion policy about adding a service charge to bills based on customer demographics.

I can’t speak for everywhere in Asia, but Japan is a different animal entirely. Sure, young European waiters might want your money, but for the most part, waiters on Japan will sincerely be insulted. Cashiers also won’t take money directly from you. They will point at the little tray in front of them and move it toward you an inch at a time until you get the hint. Very heavily ingrained in their culture.
