Some really cheap people in this thread. Tip if they give good service. Tip big if they give great service. Stay home and eat and drink if you don’t want to tip.
Thats the point. European's expect great service. Its your job to provide great service. The tip is implied as part of the cost of the meal because the service is supposed to be top notch.
Servers who do their job get paid a decent wage and do not have to hold their hand out for a few extra bucks. Servers who routinely have complaints against them get fired.
They have plenty of common sense rules/laws like this. An engineer who fricks up and makes a mistake on a bridge design that collapses gets held personally liable, instead of the company carrying some massive insurance policy and paying out lawsuits every time a fat lady cant fit in an airline seat.

Because it’s a scam. I’ve always considered a tip a thank you, not a subsidy. I don’t care if they have to tip out runners or whomever. Restaurants should pay better.

You do understand the server still pays into the restaurant and it comes out of their tips whether you only order drinks or order a 5 course meal right? If you go to a restaurant, TIP! If you don’t want to tip, stay home or go to McDonalds! It’s not difficult

Nobody outside of America tips. It’s not their custom. Oh, and blacks.

This gets repeated, but it is absolutely not true, and anyone with a passport that has the least bit of wear on it should know that.
Folks old enough to have travelled internationally before cards became the preferred method of payment will remember the tip packs you would get with some small currency from a country and an included guide for what to tip for and what not to, and the customary percentages.

The Europeans prolly have less income than the average Mississippian, so…

Any European who doesn’t know about tipping has been living under a rock and didn’t bother to do 5 minutes of internet research before traveling to a foreign country.
Any European who knows about tipping and chooses not to has no business ever complaining about the conduct of American tourists back in their own country.

Yep.
Tipping started out for a legitimate reason:
T.o
I.nsure
P.romptness
At finer establishments that made sense. And it was BEFORE the meal, which makes some sense While you still get much better table service at higher end establishments today, you don't get your food any sooner. The kitchen has your order ready in the order it was received. Your drinks, maybe if you're giving the server a cash tip each time they show back up at your table with a new drink. But no one does that. That works with bartenders for sure though.
Reality is tipping has evolved into customer subsidizing restaurant owners by paying their employees' salary. It's become an expectation.
I've said before in another thread, I worked kitchens in high school and college, from basic pizza place all the way up to James Beard awarded restaurants. The kitchen is ABSOLUTELY doing the lions share of the work. I'm not saying that as some jaded ex-cook "waaaaah why are they getting all the money!!!" No, I preferred that to waiting. I could have done that. Plenty of students have and do. Just wasn't interested. I'm simply making a statement of fact.

Tipping isn't a thing in Europe. In places like Spain the service charge is included.
It's basically how not tipping in the US would be. The prices will just be increased 10-15% to cover wages.
Look at Europeans flabbergasted with free refills, ice, and free water. That all costs the restaurant money.

Always a mistake to consider Europe as a monolith. It varies by country, in some countries, tipping is frowned upon, and in others, tipping is expected. If you are visiting a country always learn local customs, including the tipping culture. One thing I think I can safely say is that nowhere in Europe is tipping 20% for meals considered the norm that really only exists in North America. Very generally, Eastern European countries are more likely to engage in tipping than Western European countries as more of them have moved to some concept of a living wage.

As someone who worked in the service industry supplementing my income in the military I hope it catches on. Fast food should not be considered a living wage unless you’re a manager. It’s designed to get you by until you get a real job. Baristas bitching because they make less than $20/hr is exhausting.

Some people cry about every damn thing.
And you know damn well the businesses are using 'event' pricing.

Given what they're paying for all of this shite, I kinda don't blame them even if they do know.
