My thing is never do stupid things that put others' lives, livelihoods, or property in jeopardy. Think is what I am going to do affecting others, or will it make my mother cry?

You're trying to stop a destructive behavior RIGHT NOW, that may or may not have occurred before. Not the next time it happens. Punish him sufficiently now, and you might make an impression. Surely you know how stubborn and what a know it all you were when you were 16.
