Consequences Enforced Effective Immediately:
*Take the car from said teen until court date
*Grounded until court date
*Took away gaming laptop
*Required teen to spend time in common areas of house / not allowed to just hole up in the bedroom.
These sound sufficient to me.

Another thing you can try is boredom - like, make her/him sit somewhere with very little stimulus for like 5 hours. I found that was always quite dreaded.

Take his phone

I thought abt that, but several things were considered in allowing him to keep his phone.

1. I am ok with him having access to his friends via phone/text/social media considering he is grounded for a while.

I don't think isolating his fully from his friends would serve any greater good in this situation.

2. We don't have a land line and I want to be able to call him if I need to and vice versa.

3. I am trying to really take into consideration the infraction and the consequences we enforce and make them appropriate- so we decided to let him keep his phone. It wasn't a phone related thing that is the problem.

Way too harsh imo.

Agree. Why throw all the other shite in there? Negative consequences should be limited to the driving issue. Cause and effect. Not the fricking kitchen sink. Why not 25 lashes in the public square?

ETA You or yiur attorney should do everythg in your power to get that ticket dismissed or knocked down to a non-moving violation or you're going to be paying the equivalent of a mortgage in premiums.

that is an interesting point. is it possible to get it knocked down to a non-moving violation? I am not an atty, nor is my hubs, so this isn't anything that has even crossed our minds.

Seems like a fair sentence. Said teen really needs to understand the damage they could do at that speed. It's been almost 30 years since I almost got in a wreck going almost that fast. There was a suburban that stopped in front of me that didn't have working taillights, by the time I noticed I slammed on the brakes and there was smoke from my tires dragging the road. I would've died that day. I still think about it often.

I think you omitted an important detail in your OP. Weren’t you involved in serious accident the day after he got his license a month ago?

dammit wALTER yes, but it was not speeding related.

I was distracted though, trying to open a bottle of water.

He did learn from my mistake about driving too close to the edge of the roads near us that don't have any shoulder.

He is now tasked with finding a ride to/from school or he can (shamefully) ride the bus. that is a him problem as far as I am concerned.

Don’t give him the option of riding with friends, bus only.

This is not a “gotcha”. You could’ve been seriously injured/killed, but apparently the dangers of driving didn’t register with him.

30 over may be a little tough. I don't know where you are but in Jefferson Parish and other jurisdictions in Louisiana, worst case, the DA would likely offer a guilty plea under Article 894 of the criminal code. The violation would not be reported to the state or your insurance company.

Some jurisdictions might offer driving school (usually online) in exchange for a dismissal.

It might be worth a couple hundred dollars to consult with an attorney who specializeds in traffic. Worth it to try to avoid the increased insurance premiums.

you are right abt that. I drive that same road literally everyday, and have for the last 24 years. I knew better and all it took was one second of taking my eyes off the road and my other hand on the wheel turning the direction my eyes were looking and I ended up having a major wreck.

I was very fortunate, as was my son in going as fast as he was and not having any type of accident.

I am hopeful that he learns another driving lesson that will pay dividends well into the future.

thanks for that info Demshoes. That is something I had not even considered. I will check into that tomorrow.

I will def have him enrolled in driving school, and he will have to pay for that as well, but if we can avoid the increase in ins premiums that would be fantastic.

thanks again

I got in trouble for something similar. My mom gave me an orange vest and made me pick up trash on the side of the road. Looking back, that was a pretty damn good punishment.

No worries. Good luck. I've been there with my son. FYI the driving school would be through the court if that's so something that's offered. That would be negotiated with the DA.

Neg, mvr’s are not run at renewal Unless there has been an accident recorded (claim), driver added or change in autos insured.
I still got a safe driver discount with 3 speeding tickets in one year.
