this may sound dumb, but what exactly is a green tree reservoir?
Intermittantly flooded lowlands that are used to attract waterfowl and other migrating birds. It's called "green tree" because it's flooded when trees are dormant, and drained when they're active, thereby preventing damage or death to the trees.

What parish and how much acreage do you have? whats your plans for a levee system?
St. Tammany (about 12 miles due north of Lake P.), approximately 170 (not all would be flooded), levee with risers and flashboard or screw valve.

My uncle always said it's easier just to build stuff like this and deal with the consequences than get permission.
Not when you're dealing with the thugs in the federal government who can, and will, steal your property.

then go to the NRCS. According to what's in this farm bill the NRCS may help pay for it.
What is the NRCS?

You need to talk to NRCS

Built one in West Feliciana on family land. Killed the snot out of em for two years then the water elm and briars took over. Will take a dozer to it this year to remedy the problem.
It was a natural low land w' cypress and button willow that dried up every other year. Built a ring levee and added a 10" butterfly valve. No permitting was done. Fugem.

Just get a couple beavers, them suckers will dam it up fast.
I have to kill them on my place every other year to open a big bottom to drain it.
One problem I see with contacting any government is once you do, you loose all use of said land in the future to do what you want with it. Wet lands or not, screw that shite, it's mine and I will do what I please.

A couple of thoughts...
1. Is it worth building a greentree if you are the only one around?
2. In St Tammany IMO the only birds likely to use it would be wood ducks. We get a few mallards but I don't know that we get enough to make it worth the effort.
If you plans are more than just duck hunting then it may be worth it but having thought this through up on my farm in IL just didn't think it was worth it in the end.
Let us know what you decide.

In 99 and 00 you could kill ducks in a ditch as long as you had water.

If you end up going through with it...
If you need help with the earth work, I have tons of heavy equipment in Covington
I'm sure we could work out a little deal.....hunting rights for dozer and/or hoe use
ETA: I am a developer, and also have a lot of experience with DEQ, EPA, mitigation banks, etc...

I no longer have the equipment but I can still run them and will be in the area with plenty of beer.

I know a group that did 1500+/- acres. It was a bitch to get permits but since then it has killed literally tens of thousands of mallard ducks.

That is a big GT in a prime area. Where he is wanting to put one is just north of where our ranch was. We had some low lying swamp/timber that ran the back of the property. I can only remember twice it ever having any birds in it besides woodies. We did better hunting off the cow ponds. It may be more trouble than it is worth in the area he is wanting to do it.

I need to get a survey of the property, and the fellow from Franklinton needs to come take some soil samples. He sent me a link to fill out some forms for a 404 requirement. I am only in the early planning stages as of now.
