His response seems appropriately pissed so it makes me wonder who authorized this.

The hilarious part about this is that this was approved knowing full well what was going to happen. They let this event go on in order to please the woke crowd then gave a canned bullshite non-apology when they were called out on it. They know their jobs are safe no matter what they do so they don't care if people are justifiably upset about this completely inappropriate nonsense.

This is what happens when the Church abandons the scriptures and then conforms itself to the world instead of seeking to conform the world to the Church through the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Church loses all influence and moral relativism takes over.
