Yesterday’s announcement of the abrupt closure and dissolution of FreedomWorks by its board of directors is the closest thing we will get to a formal date of death for the Tea Party movement, which in truth has been dead since Donald Trump descended the escalator at Trump Tower in June 2015. Trump did for the Republican establishment what it couldn’t do on its own in killing the Tea Party and its demands for small, constitutional government.

quote:

Luke Mullins of Politico talked to people involved with FreedomWorks, including the group’s president, Adam Brandon, who were blunt that “the decision to shut down was driven by the ideological upheaval of the Trump era”:

After Trump took control of the conservative movement, Brandon said, a “huge gap” opened up between the libertarian principles of FreedomWorks leadership and the MAGA-style populism of its members. FreedomWorks leaders, for example, still believed in free trade, small government and a robust merit-based immigration system. Increasingly, however, those positions clashed with a Trump-aligned membership who called for tariffs on imported goods and a wall to keep immigrants out but were willing, in Brandon’s view, to remain silent as Trump’s administration added $8 trillion to the national debt…

To reference one William Strannix, a movement is a movement because it will only pick up and go so far. A revolution will come back around and hit you in the face.

Their message resonated, and they gained 65 seats in the 2010 midterms.

They then gathered, and within three weeks they agreed to abandon that message. You need to ask yourself why, because that why is the same why when you are trying to understand why Johnson abandoned the message that got him elected Speaker.

:Like you ever supported the tea party.

Trump has project 25 and schedule F to gut bloated govt agencies.. many intellectually honest writers have said Trump took over what the tea party failed at.

The tea party was audited by the IRS at the dems, Eric Hoilder, the DOJ NSD's and McCain's hands.

Ya'll have hit rock bottom. Time to pick out a nice rehab with a rubberroom and arts and crafts room with meatball on the telly.

There is a truth in this article that is only indirectly mentioned

The "base" of the Tea Party was completely full of shite and really just acting out at the end of the day. So many of them became MAGA which has nothing to do with fiscal restraint.

It all went downhill when the Evangelicals hijacked it, and turned it into more culture than economics.

The same thing is happening to MAGA, with some of the more Evangelical types even stating "MAGA is bigger than Trump".

This is also just another in the line of bandwagon political ideology for the non-Left, chasing whatever trends become popular for a population without a personal set of political ideals.

When did he do these during his 4 years as President?

Won't do much for spending.

Trump added $5-8T to our debtload by printing money. Even prior to Covid, our deficits were trending in the same direction. He didn't do jack shite for cutting spending in any meaningful way.

That’s what the party faithful shift from principled Conservatism to Statist populism has done. Conservatives can blame themselves though, for not giving their voters what they promised they’d deliver.

RIP small and responsible government proponents.

Tea Party was dead long before Trump came down the escalator in the summer of 2015.

Interesting thing mentioned in the article - Tea Party was at its peak in about 2012... we ended up with a reboot version of Newt (who was really just grifting) and Santorum as the alternatives to Romney once Cain faded into obscurity

Would have been a good opportunity for a conservative to grab the torch. Maybe that would have been a much better setup for Scott Walker than 4 years later.
