January 2, 2025
Key Findings
• 69% of remote workers are working a second job
• 37% of remote workers have a second full-time job and 32% have a side hustle
• 3/4 of workers with multiple jobs are running their own business on the side
• Half of respondents who are working two jobs are doing so to pay off debt, and have more spending money
For the millions of Americans who work remotely, more free time and less oversight is commonplace. But while some may use this extra time to focus on health, family, or hobbies, according to a new survey, the majority of full-time remote workers are using this flexibility and freedom to work more.
In October, ResumeBuilder.com surveyed 1,250 full-time remote workers in the U.S. to gauge how many are juggling multiple jobs. The survey revealed that 69% of remote workers have either a full- or part-time side gig. Below is a closer look at how and why America’s remote workers are managing two jobs simultaneously.
...
Thirty-nine percent of employees working two full-time remote jobs are able to do so because they say neither requires 40 hours per week to maintain. Meanwhile, 34% work more than 40 hours per week to maintain both jobs.
Among workers whose second full-time job is in-person, 60% double-dip by completing remote work while at an in-person job. Thirty-two percent maintain separate work schedules, squeezing in remote work when not at their in-person gig.
According to career counselor and job search coach Stacie Haller, it’s not surprising that workers are taking advantage of the flexibility and freedom that remote work affords.

If the company doesn’t have a clause against it, good for the worker. I’m happy for them.

Government employees have to submit a form and have it approved before working an outside job. How many do you think did that?

Easy to verify, unless additional employment was cash only (swinging on a pole or bartending maybe).

During Xiden’s reign, it’s not surprising many had to have two jobs to survive

I had guessed 3% in the other thread last week, but after see this, its likely closer to 25%.
Trump already said all those that have been working a second job will be terminated.
Easy, IRS pulls 2023/2024 returns and anyone that has a second W2 is automatically suspended and investgiated.

Not a second job, but I heard one gov employee say that nothing will change. While working from home she got everything done on Tuesday-Thursday so she didn’t have to do much on Mondays and Fridays. Has kids.
How is that possible to get your 40 in on 72 hours?

Dangit. It never crossed my mind to do this. Now it's too late.
Always a day late and a dollar short.

I don’t think this was limited to gov employees.

If they had permission from their agency and got they gov work done, why suspend them?

How so?

If they're getting their work done - who cares? I keep saying this, the idea that there will be a magical change in govt if people go to an office is dumb. Govt was a wreck before covid when everyone worked in an office. It's still a wreck. The senior people would perhaps benefit from being in the office, but that's it.

If it's private sector for both jobs, that's between them and their bosses.
Government workers, I want to know how we're making sure the side job is after hours.

You would need to expand the field to look at other means of reporting income. W2 would be the obvious starting point, though.

Nobody wants to work anymore

Why?
Because if they are only working 20-30 hrs in a 40+hr FTJ, and supposedly "getting their work done" while multitasking (another job, child care, home making, etc), then one of two things is true. Either they are underperforming in a poorly measured situation which cannot adequately ID underperformance, or the job criterion is woefully lax (or both).
quote:There might be situations where this is true. The fact you're attempting to apply the premise generically across all government fields though, badly undercuts credibility of your argument.
The senior people would perhaps benefit from being in the office, but that's it.

This isn’t the problem. The problem is that people are completing timesheets/cards for 2 companies using the same hours worked. If you are W2 that is illegal (payroll fraud).
