Kids/life jacket law when fishing?

I make my baws wear theirs without question. I even wear mine when we’re riding to walk the walk. But man it gets hot with that thing on, especially in the summer with no wind.
What’s the law on them having to wear life jackets when fishing? Not talking open water or in a high traffic area, say throwing for bass or perch in a dead end canal?

Louisiana law requires that all children age 16 and younger wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, or III PFD while underway on a vessel less than 26 feet long. The PFD must be fastened and properly sized for the child. Inflatables are not allowed for children age 16 and under. A wearable U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, or III PFD must be readily available for each of the other passengers on board.
Everyone on board a motorboat less than 16 feet propelled by a hand tiller outboard motor must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, III or V PFD while the motorboat is underway.
You must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, or III PFD for each person on board a pirogue, canoe, or kayak. The PFD must be properly sized and in serviceable condition.
If you’re riding on a personal watercraft, you must wear a U.S. Coast Guard–approved Type I, II, III, or V PFD.
Individuals engaged in watersports, including but not limited to waterskiing, being towed on a tube, wakeboarding, wake surfing, etc., must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, III, or V PFD. An inflatable PFD is not permitted.

I would think big motor running, moving. Thanks to the other poster with the under 16 and no inflatables info, I would’ve been screwed with my 14 year old in the boat.

I would assume underway pretty much means anytime the big motor is moving the boat no matter how fast.

I’m 41 and I wear my life jacket any time the motor is running. I also wear a Pfd when in my kayak. Don’t care if that makes me uncool.
My kids do the same. My 4 year old wears his all the time. My 11 year old can take hers off when we’re stopped and fishing

When we had the boat, the kids always had to wear a life jacket in the boat. They are the most likely to fall overboard and the most likely to do it awkwardly. We had to fish someone out every once in a while. No big deal.
I now fish in the kayak and always wear an inflatable when away from the launch.

I interpret that as kids have to wear life jacket at all times unless the boat is tied up to a dock, anchored, or beached on the shore. I think running the trolling motor or drifting is technically considered "underway."

The language in Texas is the same and that’s the way they interpret it. I got a warning because my son took his life jacket off when we stopped to fish.

Underway is technically defined as “not anchored, made fast to the shore, or aground.”
Even if you’re drifting, you’re under way.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a warden wrote a ticket while you’re anchored out though.

Dang, 16? My kids are much younger and wear theirs the entire time, but had no idea it was 16. I sure as hell wasn't wearing one at that age or close to it...

In Ga I think any children below 12 are required to have one on if the boat is moving as in you aren’t anchored or tied off to a dock. I was idling while we were getting stuff situated after filling up at the state park and got a ticket

Under 16 in any boat under 26' they have to have them on at all times.

Correct. Georgia makes them wear them even if they are just fishing.
