quote:I had a Versed drip which is supposed to not only calm/relax, but include memory loss. However, I remember the exact word-for-word conversation the Dentist and nurse had about my wisdom tooth and him lacking the proper tools to extract it safely when I was undergoing a procedure right next to it. (wisdom tooth was lying on the side pointing same direction as my nose, nestled under the "shoulder" of the molar next to it, required resection to remove)
I was awake at one point, he had me on a benzo with Hydromorphone and thought I would be OUT, but I was awake,
Just had that molar pulled about 3 weeks ago, mainly as a result of the wisdom tooth harboring crud that ate away the back of the molar. My Perio gave weak Norco 5's, but still, it's Norco/Hydro. He used to generally prescribe Norco 10's but has scaled back. My cousin, the general dentist, also still gives Norco 5's.

I get 750$ is pretty pricey. I would pay for it because I hate dental work. Do you regret not paying for it? How much would you pay to be knocked out ?

Hell, most of us can find one or two people who would do it for free.

I had a nightmarish procedure—2nd tooth (lateral incisor) on maxilla that had been knocked out about 12 years prior, placed intact tooth back in the socket, and fused/ankylosed to the bone. It cracked after biting an apple, so I went in for an implant.
The specialist thought he could remove the bone, but after trying for an hour, he said he didn’t have the drill he needed. He sent me to an oral/facial surgeonMD/DDS specialist, who drilled it out, then sent me back to him to place the implant. Bone grafting was obviously involved. No anesthesia, just local blocks, and it took about 6 hours that day, including driving myself around. It’s been about 15 years since that experience, but at least it’s held up nicely.

so what is with the 800mg baby aspirins
are y’all not allowed to prescribe narcotics
Then when they do give you narcotics:
“We had to crack your jawbone in half, fill the joint with sawdust, and glue it back together. You might have some mild discomfort while the sawdust cures - shouldn’t take any more than 13 weeks. We wrote you a prescription for 3 Norco’s in the meantime. You can take one every 6 hours for 0.75 days. If you run out and are still in pain, feel free to drive back to our office and pick up a prescription for 3 more.”

There’s a big push to nix the narcotics but let’s be real, you get a tooth out, you probably need at least 1-3 days worth of pain meds. It’s said that 600mg Advil + 500mg Tylenol is as or more effective than narcotics but I feel like that’s the academias talking because it didn’t compare when I had my own wisdom teeth out

Plus, pain is subjective and has a mental component. For some people, the fear of the pain is as bad as the actual sensation. Narcotics provide a calming effect that OTC pain meds don't. The OTC pain meds may well take the physical sensation down equally as well as the narcotics, but leave you still in a bit of pain. Narcotics, though, can tackle that mental aspect of pain and you just don't give a shite that you're still in a bit of pain that the painkillers aren't touching.
Tylenol 3 works well for a reason.
PROTIP: Codeine. Codeine is the reason.

Hello, my younger brother had a similar issue. He also had neck pain as a result of tooth extraction in his lower left molar. The dentist used an X-ray and an MRI to get a better look at his jaw and surrounding facial anatomy. When there are missing teeth, the strain on your face muscles increases. To replace missing teeth, dental implants were used. Because the implant body was permanent and integrated into his jaw bone, it could not be moved like a natural tooth. I believe it is better to seek advice from a dentist on what works best for you. He hasn't complained about any discomfort as a result of the procedure. Getting implants ( LINK ) was the best decision for me.

I had three wisdom teeth removed in my 40’s…one was fully impacted. They put me under and I didn’t feel a thing. Woke up nd felt great. I have no idea how that Asian fricker got back there and did it without breaking my jaw. Wasn’t even sore.
The dry sockets later were a bitch though….

It was like another $750 to be put under.
I would legit pay that with an extra zero on it to avoid being cognizant for that sort of thing Kudos to you.

Had my wisdom teeth taken out not long ago. No swelling and the worst pain I had was like a 2/10 three days after. The surgeon called and was stunned I wasn't in pain. The wife said I must have a horseshoe up my arse.
I had zero pain with wisdom teeth. They gave me twilight anesthesia so I was knocked out for it, and I slept the rest of the day once home. I took the hydrocodone as directed for the full week, and was just fine. In fact, the only bad part I recall was the withdrawals coming off however many days of hydrocodone every few hours.

I’ve had a tooth implant. Whole process was a pain in the butt. My recommendation is to get the bone graft and let it HEAL before putting the implant in. They will tell you they can do both at the same time, but what they don’t tell you is that often leads to infection, which means you lose the implant, then they have to do another bone graft, let it heal, then do another implant, then wait again for the crown. It was like a year long process. Again, I’d recommend breaking it into two procedures…extraction/bone graft…let that heal. Phase two, get the implant in. Thank me later. Had a guy in my office who had the exact same thing happen as me.

I had an implant and the dentist severed a nerve and it left my lower lip numb. At first I thought it was because of the Novocain, but when it was still numb after a couple days, I knew something was wrong. I went back in and the dentist admitted he might have “nicked” the nerve. I said it was probably the moment when I felt like an electric shock went through my jaw. When it wasn’t getting any better, he finally admitted he severed it and I would never have feeling in it for the rest of my life. He said it was the first time he’s ever done that. Just my luck it had to be me.

I sill find it amazing that Dental Hygienist gets paid 70K+ to clean teeth.
Im amazed that you find $70k to be some gigantic, princely sum of money to be paid .

I was able to get the bone graft and the insert done at the same time so no more drilling going forward.
That sounds risky, hope it heals properly and the graft takes. Sounds like you might have a loose implant in a few years.

I had 24 teeth pulled by the time I was 19.16 premolars and molars when I was 12.They were baby teeth that never fell out.Dentist would pull 4 at a time. Then when my permanent teeth came out my jaw was too small so he pulled 4 permanent teeth, all in 1 visit. Then wore braces couple years.
In the Navy at 19,my bottom wisdom teeth were impacted.Dentist pulled top tooth and cut out the bottom wisdom tooth,he did one side at a time.
Never had gas for any of them,I don’t think they used it back in those days.

I did it with just the shot. No gas. It’s not that bad.
Same here. Dentist said he'd put me under if I wanted him to but it wasn't necessary so we just went with novocaine. He put the post in 2 months ago so one more month before I get the crown. It was pretty wild, he had a tiny little ratchet tool and I could feel him (pressure) screwing it into the bone. But I'm ready to get my molar back, chewing sucks without it.

i hope it's fine. i brought up the bone graft, then the implant but every question i brought was responded with an eyeroll. not really, but i could tell he was annoyed. he's not much older than me. probably mid to late 30s. he was a navy dentist before going to the private sector. i guess he just has patients come in all the time with their youtube concerns so i just wrote it off.
