Is anyone else here doing much to combat aging as many of us creep towards and enter middle age?

I've recently started a fairly strict anti-aging regimen (serums, moisturizers, vitamin C, retinol treatments for my face and neck, and I definitely see a difference so far.

I am kind of mirroring what Bryan Johnson is doing in regards to sleep and skincare (including a red light mask that my niece is mailing me to try out).

I use Ester Lauder and while it’s pricey, it’s very effective.

When ppl find out I’m 50 they can’t believe it. I’m often guessed to be in my mid-late 30’s and occasionally in my early 40’s.

These are the products that I use:

Beef tallow on my skin. That's about it.

My sister (no pics) loads us all up with skin care products since she's worked for a few different companies. Clinique for Men is probably the cheapest that most people would get behind. If you're looking to cosmetically combat aging, this would be the way to go, along with getting 8+ hours of sleep every night. I've read about taking collagen powder daily and how it helps with skin. Other foods include avocado, fatty fish, and a high veggie diet.

Take cold showers vs. hot showers. Hard to do regularly. I've heard of people getting into the habit of doing a cold shower to somewhat shock their bodies in the morning and help get a boost from that.

Staying out of the sun will help immensely. Even a sauna has its benefits.

I started using nilotica shea butter. Absorbs on skin really well.

The absolute biggest thing is daily SPF in your moisturizer. Cumulative sun exposure is hell on your skin. Ideally use one with mineral sunscreen. It's pricier than chemical but I don't like the ingredients in chemical. I use one that's tinted so I don't get that white cast on my face.

Besides that, washing your face in the evenings and changing your pillowcase regularly will be the next steps. From there you can get into the weeds with hyaluronic acid, retinol a few times a week, etc. Start with the basics though.

1. Sunscreen
2. Tretinoin cream at night (need a prescription)
3. Vitamin C serum in morning (look for L-ascorbic acid)

Those 3 have the best evidence for benefits and would be the most cost effective.

I also use a gentle face wash and moisturize

When I was home bound during the Covid year that bled into 2, I started going outside with no sunscreen for at least 20 minutes before it got brutal hot with just shorts on. Never did more than 20 minutes though. Felt it gave me lots of energy on top of just generally resetting my head for the remainder of the day. I know that is frowned upon these days but I think that natural Vitamin D boost is crucial. Any more sun exposure than that and I am putting sun block on like that dude in Benchwarmers.

As for genreal skin care, I pretty much just use some Nivea Men's Skin Lotion before bed. Skin looks good I guess for being 52.

I would say not to be afraid of the sun. It's extremely good for you. Your diet (seed oils) plays a big role in how the sun may or may not damage your skin.

I tried a few fancy expensive things and then tried tallow. Tallow is superior and simple. Only downside is my dog thinks its a treat.

There’s nothing wrong with the sun and if you are using commercial sunscreen you are putting all kinds of awful chemicals on your skin. Use something with all natural ingredients or tallow etc. I try to get 30 mins of sun a day.

Thanks I'll look into this - any evidence that it works below the surface of the skin at all?

Bryan Johnson is trying a cream that supposedly got replenishes fat underneath your skin but he hasn't given his verdict on that yet

All I can think about as I read this thread is that scene in American Psycho when Patrick Bateman goes over his "skin care regimen" ..

Yep. The whole “stay out of the sun and slather sunscreen on everyday” isn’t the best advice.
