From what I’ve heard he’s had trouble adapting to the new breed of college athlete.

Here's to hoping the resignation isn't linked to the LSU job.

Remember when a Patterson led Mountain West Conf. 13-0 team beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl?

I 'member.

Ironically, being in the Big 12 they didn't get as good bowl games after that being their last year in the MWC.

Patterson is a douche of the 9th degree. But a good coach. Wonder what happened the last couple of years. I know A&M and UT being on somewhat of an upswing really cut into his recruits but as many here said- he seemed to have just lost his fire.

This is exactly it. The constant threat of the transfer portal makes it very hard for him to succeed with his style of coaching.

I was on the defensive practice field at TCU for years, its a major minsconception people have that Bumpas had a big impact. Gary ran the defense 100%, all Bump did was coach the defensive line. He was a hell of a d-line coach though.

I know a guy who played for him and hated him for 4 years, but later realized what a great coach he was and respects how he got everything out of his players.
He is a very good coach who is sick and tired of BS that is associated with coddling players and making sure everything is PC.

My biggest worry about going to the Big 12 and getting better recruits was the fact that the players wouldn't respond to his style of coaching.

When I played at TCU we were still in the Mountain West and had a roster full of overlooked guys with chips on their shoulders because they weren't wanted by the Big 12 schools in the state. So my teammates would respond well to his very hard nosed boot camp style of coaching where he would be all over your arse every play in practice. And the willingness to be coached and learn is a big one. Too many high school players think they have it made and don't need to learn.

I could see today's more entitled players not responding to that well at all.

That's always been an issue but it seems to have gotten much worse.

Recruits are told they are God's gift to football and the program won't survive without them along with the other standard red carpet treatment.

Then day 1 at spring camp and you're getting ripped on by multiple coaches all day. The dichotomy back then was "it's just how it is". Now it is different. Many can't seem to handle going from hero to zero (until you prove otherwise). It didn't affect you as a person back then; now words like "trauma" and "self-esteem" get thrown back at you for an arse chewing.

Then... to make it worse... introduce the transfer portal.

But I truly believe most of it is a result of the delta between how a recruit is treated and how a player is treated. The recruiting game has stepped up... the arse chewings never stopped.

And so much of that is beyond the coaches' control now. All those recruiting services and fan sites have creepy professional jocksniffers stalking recruits and acting like they're the center of the world. It's pretty amazing that you now have drunk casual fans recognizing recruits and talking to them during them visits. Even in the late 90's and early 2000's, the new guys weren't shite until they did something on the field. Now they can roll in thinking they're already celebrities.

Has his defense been that good since the move to the Big 12?
