I’ve never seen a wild black bear where I live in Louisiana, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were any number of them in North Louisiana.

I lived in South La. for 18 years and never saw a bear. Lots of gators and lots of poisonous snakes.
I've lived in North La. much longer and never saw a bear. Lots of deer. They eat breakfast in my front yard and then return to the forest an hour before sunrise.

Then ya'll aren't looking in the right spots. and there are no poisonous snakes in LA.

If the biologists have done the work to determine that this is the sustainable limit in Louisiana I’m good with it.
10 is not even anywhere close to enough. They also need to expand it into parishes with lesser habitat than the hot zone in NE LA and South Central La.

I’ve seen 3 different sows fron stand this year. Feeders don’t stand a chance.

When I did my hunter education class, they made sure to cover bears and how they were protected.

They also talked about a guy who had mistakenly killed a bear and got in deep shite over it. What made me smile was that the guy was a professor at ULL and his background was supposedly biology. And he claimed he had mistaken the bear for a pig.

Thanks for the article text.

The article words it, and I bet the petition is worded, to make people think hunters can kill up to 10 bears per season, which sounds like a blood bath. In fact, it's ten total bears that would be killed. They will issue one tag to ten different hunters chosen by lottery.

The original goal of the plan to re-establish the Black Bear in Louisiana was to get the population high enough to support manageable hunting seasons

TCE is my neighborhood and word of sightings spread pretty fast. A lot of food. Deer everywhere.

Wildlife management should NEVER be done at the ballot box.

It should be left up to the state game and fish departments.

I’m no biologist but….how bad could the problem or how big could the population be that killing just ten animals would make some sort of impact?

Uh, I live in the woods. In the last 10 years I've killed 2 water mocs, 6 copperheads and 1 coral snake. All of them in my back yard.

Those are venomous Zach. He got you on a technicality.

And I think the bear season is a fine idea. I just wish it was 50 per year, at least. Bears were fine in Louisiana up until 5 million people showed up.

One wondered into the wrong side of town in Ruston late summer and got murdered. Union Parish just above us is out of control with them.

i hunt in Tensas and we see way more bear than deer, 25 years ago you would have a couple sightings a year between the entire membership - now everyone is seeing bear nearly every hunt

was told that a biologist set up camera on a sow's den in the Tensas Reserve and she brought back several fawns for her cubs over the spring/ summer...that is one sow - so imagine the overall impact on the deer population

you could give out 30 tags in tensas alone

If I'm not going to eat it, I don't hunt it unless it is a nuisance animal.

I hadn't had it before, but actually tried bear a few years back when Oklahoma opened up black bear season. My buddy's stepdad drew a tag and got one somewhere down south of Muskogee and sent us some bear sausage he had processed, and it was pretty delicious.

Lemme splain how disinterested I am in technicalities. In addition to what I listed, I've killed a dozen non venomous snakes in my yard. I'm very nonjudgmental. I just kill them and let God judge them in snake heaven.

Don’t shoot one with a GPS tracker on its neck. And if you shoot one be very selective about who you tell and don’t bring it to a taxidermist and don’t post the photos on Facebook.

You will probably have to be Jeff Landry’s cousin or political donor to end up with one of the ten legitimate bear tags.
