Not sure how many of y’all have moved from Louisiana, but I swear the place has ruined food for me.

Last night we went to a pretty high-end dinner that was multiple courses, drink pairings, chef comes out and describes each dish, blah, blah, blah. Everyone all night was raaaaaaving about the food, and I thought it was a C+ at best.

I’ve been gone from Louisiana for over a decade now, and I swear its food scene ruined all others for me forever. My dad and I talk about it all the time as he left as well, but damn, it’s like everywhere we go it’s nothing but overcooked, bland food. Anyone else struggle with this? RIP for the deer that was killed to make that trash, bone dry venison that was served last night.

Maybe you just have been accustomed to too much salt and spice. Other places people like to taste the FOOD, not just the cayenne. Maybe we’re just genetically disposed to having fewer tastebuds…therefore we gravitate toward over-seasoned items to get our kick.

There’s a delicacy to fine dining that is subtle and nuanced, and I doubt most trained chefs have a cabinet at home with Slap Yo Momma in it.

Louisiana certainly has better food than it you would expect.

In rural southern LA you have a great cajun influence that results in quite imaginitive food compared to somewhere like rural Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, New York, etc...

New Orleans has better food than you would expect from a metro area with similar size, IE Buffalo, Knoxville, Grand Rapids, Sarasota. Obviously the 300 year old french influence plus the gulf coast vietnamese and thai influence is terrific.

I don't know that food outside Louisiana sucks, but Louisiana is certainly well above average for both rural areas and mid-size metro areas.

No, there’s a lot of amazing food in a lot of different places. The fact that you think that LA is the only place with good food is much more of an indictment on you than it is food outside LA.

There are tons of cities/regions in the US with great restaurants and food.
If you went to a well respected nice restaurant and couldn’t somehow enjoy the food, something is off with your tastebuds

Right. I'd even entertainment arguments that Louisiana is overrated in terms of food.

not just the cayenne.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve eaten at a restaurant that has cayenne in their food

No

Some of y'all really think Louisiana is the only place that has good food?

Lots of fat, salt, and spices tends to taste good for most people.

It’s also why Tex Mex is so popular and keeps cardiologists busy.

Not sure.

I tend to find good everywhere.

I will say that in terms of restaurants, Louisiana, and particularly New Orleans, is the most-overrated in the entire nation.

Where do you live? You must be in a food desert. Louisiana food is VERY good but you don't have as many good non-cajun options as you would in other big cities in other states.

The only exception is Greek / Lebanese food. I've yet to find a city in the US with better food like this.

Once you leave and go back, you learn that most of the love for Louisiana restaurants was nostalgic.

Even Louisiana cooks can screw up etouffe, jambalaya, and gumbo.

It’s better to cook those yourself regardless of where you live.

Not everyone is going to share your same opinion. It’s ok if someone finds it overrated and you don’t.

I’m from NOLA and still live there, and I’ve traveled quite a bit in my life. I’ve come to the conclusion that all big cities have good high-end restaurants with good food just like NOLA. The difference lies in the cheap, hole-in-the-wall restaurants. Some of the best food in NOLA comes from those types of places, but in other cities, it’s the blandest, crappiest food you’ll ever eat.

yes, the world is devoid of good food outside of our tiny little state.

This is a ridiculous myth. Very few Louisiana dishes are spicy hot with a lot of cayenne, Chef Paul's blackening pushed this along, but a lot of things like etouffe, have delicate flavor profiles. Gumbo is herbal but very rarely every spicy hot.

A lot of other places have great food on the high end, but, as another poster said, we excel on the small family restaurants, hell, even our gas stations have some great dishes.
